What do I need to activate Evolutions spell checker?
What do I need to install in order to get the Evolution spell checker? Or is SuSE's version of Evolution broken? Thanks, Avi -- Avi Schwartz Avi@CFFtechnologies.com

Had originally posted the following comments in February. At that time the method was quite reliable. The success ratio has dropped significantly since then, so I would treat the following as merely a starting point: ****************************************** This methods works for SuSE 7.2 and 7.3. If you are using SuSE try the following IN THE SEQUENCE LISTED: 1. using red carpet, rpm or whatever load pspell0.12.2-ximian.4 (not a newer version) 2. ftp the aspell and gnomespell rpm's from Ximian. 3. use Yast1 to install aspell and gnomespell (rpm --force might work, but I know that Yast definitely does and ignores the dependency) 4. using gnome control centre -> html viewer -> miscellaneous ensure that spell checking is enabled and that you have selected the language "en", not en-gb or en-ca. This should work, but only if you do it in sequence and possibly offer a sacrifice to the deity of your choice. ********************************************* HTH. ps if you do find a reliable method of getting spell checking to work post a comment to the list, as my wife is not pleased that I have evolution spell checking working on my computer and not hers. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? You need gnome-spell, which in turn is based on pspell. You could try the version at www.usr-local-bin.org/gnome-spell.php (no long linked on the site as I'm not 100% convinced about it - it works for me at work, but not at home!)

James, I upgraded to 1.0.8 from your site on Saturday and Evolution works brilliantly I already had a copy of Gnome-spell that I downloaded from your site with the previous version of Evolution. All I can say is both work brilliantly. Keep up your website, your efforts are most appreciated. David Bottrill

I would like to get the spell-checker working in Evolution as well. I installed aspell and pspell and also gnome-spell but Evolution still won't underline misspelled words. In addition, if I type out an email and go to Edit|Spell Check Document, it tells me that no misspelled words are found (when it should have). I am using Evolution 1.0.7. Is there some place I'm supposed to "turn on" spell checking in Evolution? I looked everywhere but couldn't find it. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
I think you probably also need an aspell dictionary for your $LANG - I use one from Ximian, my $LANG is en_GB, so I've got aspell-en-gb-0.33.7.1-ximian.3 installed

Yes, I also have aspell-en installed along with aspell, pspell, and gnome-spell. I've also checked gnomecc and spell-checking is enabled with "en" as the language in HTML Viewer|Miscelleaneous. I also upgraded to Evolution 1.0.8 and upgraded the above-mentioned spelling packages to the most recent versions (using the very nice SuSE apt-get!). Still, Evolution won't spell-check my emails. Any other suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks, Charles __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sign up for SBC Yahoo! Dial - First Month Free http://sbc.yahoo.com

Please start Evolution from a console, try to do a spell check and post any error messages that appears in the console. Charles -- "I once witnessed a long-winded, month-long flamewar over the use of mice vs. trackballs...It was very silly." (By Matt Welsh)

A long shot to try is to add pspell-devel to your system. That sometimes helped on the old days of evolution (i.e. vers 0.13) -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? GPG/PGP ID - 0x7A1BEA01

Hi Charles, I was in exactly the same position as you, until yesterday. I downloaded the rpm of gnome-spell at www.usr-local-bin.org/gnome-spell.php and immediately I installed it Evolution 1.08 started spell checking :) I don't know why it works where others don't, but I am sure glad it does. That did the trick! I removed the version that I installed with apt-get and installed the rpm you mentioned and it all works perfectly. Thanks to all for your help!
