So you have a Vostro 1700 with 8600 and 1920x1200 LCD?
lspci says: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1) and yes a 1920x1200 LCD
I see no Composite option? Are you sure XGL is not installed?
/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager is DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER=Xorg There is no additional Xorg.9?.log in /var/log/ which normally indicates a running XGL Is there another way to check if XGL kicked in? Composite seams to be added automatically (see /var/log/Xorg.0.log) (II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is (II) NVIDIA(0): enabled.
Also see two nVidia devices defined? It that correct?
This is just because nvidia-settings and sax2 wrote to the same xorg.conf file. I think it is save to delete die Device[0] one Alexander -- Dr. Alexander Egger, Studiengang IT & IT-Marketing CAMPUS 02 Fachhochschule der Wirtschaft GmbH Körblergasse 126, 8021 Graz, Austria/EUROPE T:+43 316 6002 395 M:+43 699 14102026 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Same.

Nope, I get the following when executing compiz-manager xxx@xxxlaptop:~> compiz-manager Checking for Xgl: not present. Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 Class 0300: 10de:0407 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present. Checking for non power of two support: present. Checking for Composite extension: not present. aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity no /usr/bin/metacity found, exiting What version of nvidia driver do have installed. I have 169.12. He didn't say if he turned on the Xgl server. Edit the file /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and set the follwoing: DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER=Xgl Restart your X server and try again. -- Rafael -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, (we) dont want Xgl. I am trying to get the same performance on my Vostro 1700 without Xgl. Xgl works great, but I cant run any of my other OpenGL stuff. So I would like to use plain nVidia drivers and Compiz, but the performance is weird. It will rotate the cube at lightning speed and then just "hickup" for about 2 sec, same for Alt-Tab. I can see Xorg going to 100% and then relaxing again. Can this be an issue with the AIGLX impl in the nvidia driver? That particular symptom sounds exactly like the behavior of beagle on my machines - Silky smooth operation was attained by killing the beagle processes and removing the packages. YMMV. Joe No, Beagle didn't see more than 10min on my machine - nuked if as soon as the machine booted the first time. As I said, what bugs me is my desktop PC with a lesser videocard (6600) and exactly the same install have none of these issues. And the laptop runs smoothly compiz with XGL installed - so the driver, card and install is fine - can only be something in X.
