I have a vfat hd which I share between SuSE and my XP seconadary boot. I want it to be available to one of my users without having to use root. Is this possible? the /etc/fstab line is: /dev/hdb1 /fido vfat defaults 0 0 Sean

the /etc/fstab line is:
/dev/hdb1 /fido vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/hda7 /windows/F vfat auto,users,rw,umask=0 0 0 0 0 This is what I have in my /etc/fstab, and it gives me read write access to the vfat drive(s) there. "defaults" did not work for me.

The 'defaults' bit automatically assigns ownership to root. I believe this assignation when adding a secondary hard drive is new in SuSE 9.2 In 9.1 it did not give the 'defaults' assignation. Well, not with me anyway :-) I have my second drive set up as as an extended partition by the way. It just makes it easier for me to swap it between the slave on my Linux tin and the slave on my Window$ tin. A hint, whatever you do, don't be tempted to reformat it as NTFS filing system. Linux will read it but it does not like it and has the possibility of causing problems in the future. -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR

/dev/hda8 /windows/g vfat uid=1000,gid=100,umask=002,exec,dev,suid,rw,auto 0 0 This is for legacy dos under 8.2 and now 9.1 -- _______ _______ _______ __ / ____\ \ / / ____|_ _\ \ / / | | \ \ /\ / / (___ | | \ \ / / | | \ \/ \/ / \___ \ | | \ \/ / | |____ \ /\ / ____) |_| |_ \ / \_____| \/ \/ |_____/|_____| \/
