Hi everyone. After recompiling the kernel (6.4) I see a good bzImage in /arch/i386/boot but I can't run LILO as it tells me: /boot/boot.b missing The LILO prompt ends at LI How can I get back to normal? This is being written by booting from the CD-ROM. At least everything is accessible after installing a SuSE kernel, Just want to get back to my old configuration in /boot/old and try again! Is /boot/boot.b actually there? If you are booting from the CD, the directory may not actually be called /boot, it may be called /mnt/boot or something similar (I really have no idea though, because I very infrequently have to resort to booting from the CD...). The 'LI' prompt usually means that either the hard disk geometry is incorrect or... wait for it - you've moved /boot/boot.b. So when you run 'lilo', is /boot actually mounted under /boot? Hi Chris, Hi everyone. Thanks. It was the disk geometry. My IBM 10.2 disk needs the 'linear' set in lilo. The /boot/boot.b however remains a mystery. I had to re-install the base system to get it back and for lilo to run to LIL. Fixing the linear then did it. Oh, and almost forgot why I did all this: To get the SuSE supplied kernel occupying less space. Success yes. But no speed increase at all!
