Hi all,
From the thread Re: [SLE] Can't compile k3b-0.8 under SuSe using kde3.1, Message-Id: <200302241047.34008.olfab@web.de>, I learned that it's possible to do away with the scsi emulation needed to burn cd's. So I removed ide-scsi from /etc/sysconfig/kernel, removed hdc=ide-scsi from grub. I ran mkinitrd, and changed the symbolic links to point to hdc and hdd. When I went into K3B setup, it was unable to see any of my drives for writers. it sees them both as cdrom drives.
But when searching /var/log/warn for an answer / cause i found this message ... Feb 26 15:27:01 VMXLinux kernel: paride: version 1.06 installed (parport) Feb 26 15:27:01 VMXLinux kernel: pg: pg version 1.02, major 97 Feb 26 15:27:01 VMXLinux modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module paride_protocol Feb 26 15:27:01 VMXLinux kernel: pg0: Autoprobe failed Feb 26 15:27:01 VMXLinux kernel: pg: No ATAPI device detected Feb 26 15:27:01 VMXLinux insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/block/paride/pg.o: init_module: Operation not permitted Feb 26 15:27:01 VMXLinux insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/block/paride/pg.o: insmod char-major-97 failed The only time it appeared is after removing ide-scsi, so What is paride? Should I be worried? Do I have to load something into sysconfig/kernel ? Any help would be appreciated. -- Franklin Maurer Usinf SuSE 8.1

I figured out what was wrong with the paride message. I needed to add ide-cd to /etc/sysconfig/kernel. So nowhow do I get k3b to recognize the ide drive for burning/. I'm running cdrao 1.1.7 k3b 0.8-0 cdrecord 2.01.a03-0 hdc = tdk burner hdd = dvd rom Any help would be appreciated.
I believe you'll need a special/new/beta version of cdrecord or some other commandline tool. IDE burning probably isn't supported in any GUI interface yet, maybe after updating that too. Op woensdag 26 februari 2003 22:40, schreef Franklin Maurer:

It is supported by a recent xcdroast, which requires cdrtools 2.0. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Also, following the 2.5.0 (soon to be 2.6/3.0) kernel development, the kernal will be able to support non ide-scsi cdrw devices. This is perhaps why the beta/special version of cdrecord is also in development. It's is most likely for preparation of this new kernel feature. Many new improvements that are listed in the changelog of the new kernal will be sorely welcome to the community/usres. Such things as the ide cd burner support, better I/O for multimedia, etc. Also the compilers and libs have some new facets as well. The down side to some the the compilers issue from what I can gather is how it will effect some older/present programs, e.g. Wine and _errno/_errno.h flags. They are working hard on this as well as cited on the Wine devel and others lists. It will be both interesting and also a bit confusing regarding the fact that the newer kernel will have many new abilities but there's a question of compatibliity with certain programs. Device support will be expanded nicely however. Just a note.
