Hi List,
I just got one of those switch boxes to change from computer to computer, and when I hop from server to another I loose the mouse, keyboard is ok, but how to avoid/fix this problem?
The box is a cheap KVM 4 port switch ,model kys-104, box says it does support Linux, so I don't know wher is the problem.
Any advice, my mouse if an (gasp) Microsoft intellimouse optical usb, connected to the box using a usb to ps2 convertor, I remember having the same problem with early versions of redhat, I have a suse 10.2 and Centos 4 which I need to switch to from time to time.
Any advice would be welcome, thanks
That's a common problem that I've only seen with Linux. I haven't had it happen with Windows or OS/2. With earlier kernels, you could clear the problem by switching to a command terminal and then back to the desktop. However, that doesn't seem to work with the 2.6 kernel. I've heard a USB mouse (that's USB all the way, not through a PS/2 adapter) and KVM works, but don't have any experience with one of those.
I've seen this happen with an old version of Windows. I'm not sure whether the problem exists with the OS or with the computer itself. But I do know the cure: you don't use a passive switch box, you have to buy a more expensive electronic switch box, and the problem should go away. Buy the switch with a money-back guarantee, in case it doesn't. BTW, you should be able to switch printers with a cheapie. I believe.
I don't think this is a KVM problem but more of a mother board issue as it initializes the mouse and keyboard on boot. And I have seen it many times on my Windows XP box and infact, it looses it more often than the Linux boxes, such that I keep a second mouse directly attached (USB) to the system. Here at my Office, I have a Windows 2003 Server that I have to keep a mouse directly attached because it won't work through the KVM at all. Oh, my KVM's are industrial strength, not inexpensive.
