I'd like to see Opera left out of 10.0. I personally don't like it very much. houghi wrote:

What you personally like or dislike is not really a criteria for inclusion in the distribution. It's rather whether it's *supported* or not by the SUSE staff. At least that's currently what's decisive on whether some piece of software is included into SUSE Linux or not. Still, you could make your own distribution based on SUSE Linux OSS, and add what you like and remove what you don't like ;) Nevertheless, as far as Opera is concerned, the fact that it's ad-free or not doesn't make a difference. Shipping it as a package or not, as part of SUSE Linux or of a 3rd party repository, depends solely on its redistribution license: http://www.opera.com/distribute/ The license is not clear.. or rather, I couldn't find any information about it, neither a license. Well, maybe someone should contact them and ask what the redistribution conditions are: http://www.opera.com/distribute/ Still, it will never be part of SUSE Linux OSS, unless it's being released under an OpenSource license (which it is not). Someone could probably provide it in a 3rd party repository, but information is needed. cheers - -- -o) Pascal Bleser http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/ /\\ <pascal.bleser@skynet.be> <guru@unixtech.be> _\_v The more things change, the more they stay insane. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDMDncr3NMWliFcXcRAp/bAJwKI5NVRxW8IqdTVzvMwMNUrWJbFACgm5oI wpgGU2vH1ace16jSGgSz1xg= =eUFe -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

OK. I see where I went wrong. I run 9.1 and opera is included there. It never crossed my mind that that could have changed. Just checked and it is also included in 9.2 amd 9.3, so perhaps Novell has an agreement to include it in SUSE 10.0 and not 10.0 OSS. houghi -- Quote correct (NL) http://www.briachons.org/art/quote/ Zitiere richtig (DE) http://www.afaik.de/usenet/faq/zitieren Quote correctly (EN) http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html

Opera is proprietary and not OpenSource, so it won't be included in SUSE Linux OSS (I guess). Opera is "freely distributable" (I suppose), so it's the same as Realplayer, Adobe Reader, ... I downloaded Opera on SUSE Linux 10 rc. Its no problem when Opera isn`t included, a download is just a easy way to do. So why border to place it on SUSE Linux 10.0 or SUSE Linux OSS 10.0. Ben

That is true for probably the nmjority of software included with SUSE, yet it all is included. For the user the thing that makes SUSE enjoyable is that a lot of software is already included. I don't have to do a search what the exact URL of an rpm is and do rpm -Uvh http://example.com/kjdkjd/kjdhshk/uqq/ccu/file.rpm. I just start up YaST and install it. And as I said, it was included till 9.3, so unless the policy has suddenly been changed, I see no reason why it should NOT be included. houghi -- Quote correct (NL) http://www.briachons.org/art/quote/ Zitiere richtig (DE) http://www.afaik.de/usenet/faq/zitieren Quote correctly (EN) http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html

Hello, Is there anyone, who was able to run it on PPC? If I install the static version, then the installation works, but the software does not work afterwards: czanik@linux:~> opera ERROR: ld.so: object 'libjvm.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored. ERROR: ld.so: object 'libawt.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored. Trace/breakpoint trap If I try to install a shared version, I get: linux:/home/czanik # rpm -i opera-8.50-20050916.3-shared-qt.ppc-en.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libXm.so.1 is needed by opera-8.50-20050916.3 libXm.so.2 is needed by opera-8.50-20050916.3 And I don't seem to have those... I'm answering my own question. Yes there is one from Blackdown, a 1.3 version presently, but they seem to be working on newer also. I would have thought that was included from the ftp to download. I wonder if IBM has anything newer, since they are so heavily vested in PPC? So all is not lost for PPC users, of which I might very well become since SuSE has again decided to provide it to us! :o) Lee

Opera is not OpenSource, so it will not be in our OSS (=OpenSourceSoftware) distribution - but we'll make it available...
