Hi, don't get me wrong, I am seriously wondering, not offending, why do you people upgrade your SuSE version? Many of you seem to have done this, so you can probably tell me. I've been using SuSE 7.2 ever since it came out and it has done pretty well. Also, with every new release I wonder if I should upgrade, but the only thing I can see from the site is that installing has become even easier and new versions of free software has been included. Easy installation should not be a reason to upgrade, I thought and the latest versions of software are always available from their own websites. The packages I care for to have the latest version of are LyX and WindowMaker, for the rest I can live with what is already there. Of course, the info SuSE provides on her site about new versions is for new users, so I thought, perhaps you can tell me, what would be a good reason for existing users to upgrade. What were the reasons for you? They might apply to me as well. So far, the only thing I can think of is the newer version of XFree86, which also supports the 3d capabilities of my video card, an ATI Rage 128 pro so that I can run the very cool packages like flightgear and racer. Again, don't get me wrong. Thanks, Vinay

Personally, I was swayed by three things. First, the kernel now comes in various versions, optimized for different processors rather than assuming a basic 386, which gives better speed. Second, SuSE 8.1 comes with Gnome 2 support as standard, which as a Gnome user I was keen on. Third, the improved YaST rpm manager. Given these, having a more recent DVD as backup was also a Good Thing - if anything goes wrong, I can get a clean system more easily without such a great need for upgrades than with my old 7.3. Also, I originally bought a personal edition and (given that I was tending towards upgrading anyway), the thought of having the Pro edition was also tempting, so that I have the devel libs to hand if I need them. Why do distributions exist? To make it easier on you to get work done with Linux. Now, of course latest versions are available from sites, but if you spend your time compiling shitloads of stuff, there's less time left for the things you really like. I only compile avifile CVS and mplayer (when avifile CVS is broken), used to compile the kernel too, all the rest I use from rpm.

Here you are saying that you don't need the latest, except for LyX and WM, then you don't really need an upgrade. Other people might need more newer stuff. I'm not an old time SuSEr, I converted since 8.0 came up. In every installation I have done, I have chosen Postfix instead of Sendmail and CUPS instead of lprng. Now, with 8.1 there will be less things to worry about. -- Silviu Marin-Caea Systems Engineer Linux/Unix http://www.genesys.ro Phone +40723-267961

I wondering why are you asking this question? Surely, if I wish to upgrade that is my choice whether YOU think it is reasonable or not. Eddie

This is a fair question. For me, it's simple. With each new release from SuSE comes better support for new hardware, and new applications I hadn't thought of trying yet. I don't use my copy of SuSE on just one machine. It's installed on my bother's computer and my sister's as well. I also loan out my disks to friends who are interested in trying out Linux but aren't ready to make that 60+ Euro leap yet. These people expect to see an OS that they can deal with... the easier tehi nstall they happier they are. Also my myself, I am able to get my hardware working - for example my scanner.... with lots of patience, and several long nights I managed to get it working under previous versions of SuSE. With 8.1 it worked right off the fresh install... I didn't have to do anything except tell the system what scanner I had. So... you upgrade if you want the latest kernel, the latest hardware support, and if you don't feel like, or don't have time to futz around tweaking things etc. If you have a stable system working on 6.1 (or whatever) and it's doing what you need it to do there is no need to upgrade. It's not mandatory... C.
