SuSE 8.1, Gnome2 I use nautilus to draw my Gnome2 desktop, but Gnome itself has recently started placing icons on the desktop also (all stacked on top of one another and not movable). I can get rid of them by opening a nautilus window and then closing it, but it is annoying to have to do this every time I log in. The icons that it places are duplicates of the ones nautilus draws; renaming the desktop directory removes both sets of icons on logging in again. The only change that I made is to move from using bitmap icons to SVG icons. How can I stop Gnome placing the icons? You can use nautilus or some other programs to draw your desktop; but if you change from one to another you may have to tell one of them to stop drawing the desktop. I know I'm being vague: it happened to me but I don't remember exactly wich program I had to "convince". -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

What seems to be happening is that both Gnome and nautilus are drawing the same icons on the desktop, with the Gnome ones on top (so running nautilus brings its desktop to the front?). If I move the shortcuts away from .gnome-desktop, both sets vanish, returning when I return the shortcuts. This is my problem - two apps are using the same shortcuts to draw the desktop but only nautilus is getting the icons and positions correct. Any idea how to correct this? I'm not sure, because I don't have the same gnome version as you. But I got that sympton (at least, I got double icons) months ago with suse 7.3, and it was just an option in nautilus or an equivalent program (gmc?), something as "don't draw desktop" or "don't draw icons". -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Aha! Somehow gmc had got autorun every time I logged in, and was drawing the errant icons. Killing it and logging out/in removed it from the list.
