I use Thunderbird and KMail for a while without problems. If you can provide more details: How did you enter user id and password, manually or copy paste? Do you let Thunderbird and KMail store your passwords, or you type them every time you access mail server? What language you are using? Try to type password in text editor to see is that what mail server expects? Does your mail server expects encryption, and what method?
