[SLE] have you had Success with SoftRAID...
I am trying to build a file softraid for a fileserver with 36 G SCSI drives. Has anyone had success building a softRAID My config so far: Disk 1 16mb L native /boot (ext2) 33.11 GB Linux RAID 1.06 Linux swap (swap) Disk 2 16mb L native (ext2) 33.11 GB Linux RAID 1.06 Linux swap RAID 1 Md0 = reiser style for / Any recommendations for config?
Thanks for your help so far... BTW, as another alternative hardware RAID solution. What is the most reliable IDE RAID card out there that can do well with ReiserFS? I am currently looking at: PROMISE FASTTRAK100 TX2 PCI ULTRA-ATA/100 RAID CONTROLLER For RAID 1 w/ 2 80G drives Application: fileserver.. What are your thoughts. Software RAID works well and is fairly reliable... sync (or rebuild) times are a bit slower than most hardware cards that I've seen, but for the price. As for IDE RAID, I think (and have had the best luck with) 3Ware cards. They have recently fixed a number of bugs (hardware and software) concerning timeouts on drives... and they are REALLY fast with some decent drives. They are fully supported under Linux as well. I have a 7810 with 8 Western Digital WD1000JB disks config'd for RAID 10. It's amazingly fast, especially considering the total cost relative to SCSI solutions. While SCSI will typically give you higher I/O rates, this box performs very well and I've seens as high as 117 MBytes/second on writes to the array. I've achieved 33 MBytes/second over NFS from a Sun client (on a Gig network.) - Herman Jon Jon San Juan wrote:

Any RAID Controller will do well with any file system as the controller doesn't care what data is put on the disks.
PROMISE FASTTRAK100 TX2 PCI ULTRA-ATA/100 RAID CONTROLLER
Forget Fasttrak controllers as these aren't real hardware RAID controllers. Under Windows the driver does the RAID stuff and under Linux the software RAID will be used. If you want a real RAID controller, use one of the 3Ware controllers. You'll find more info at http://www.3ware.com. AFAIR, prices start Philipp
I have a couple of redundant servers running with RAID1 in production since long time and never had a problem... We have restored one disk so far (just for test :-). The Software RAID How-to is your best source for information... It is very easy unless you mount your boot and root partitions in the RAID. Write me a line if you need further help. Pep Serrano.
