Well, to be honest, I can't directly help with any of your problems. But I can give you some pointers and tell you what I would do to move forwards.
Installation went OK (each time)with Yast2, can set up KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment & OSS sound without problem. Didn't use Yast as I was not familiar with Linux and didn't want to introduce unnecessary complications.
Sound card is SB live 1024, Alsa, (SuSe/Administration/Configuration/alsaconf) gets as far as the opening screen, that's it, will not even accept the "OK", no error messages, no error log
The ALSA website is at www.alsa-project.org. They don't mention the SB Live 1024, and nor does the hardware database at www.linux.com. Both those sites mention the SB Live 512 as supported, so your card might not be supported in the stable kernel yet. I would recommend posting a request for help on comp.os.linux.hardware. A search of the newsgroups at Deja (www.deja.com) shows that people are using this card with Linux, but no one mentions ALSA. Do you have any joy using OSS?
Sane,(SuSe/Multimedia/Graphics/Xsane) nothing at all happens, no screen, no messages.
Sane is a funny thing. I've never found it very convincing with my SCSI Epson scanner. USB is still a tricky subject with Linux although the 2.4 kernel is much better. I'd use the scanner from Windows for a while (while you sort out your other problems) then try asking again.
Modem (Yast2), locks on the yast2/network/modem screen, no messages (on purchase I specified a "non-Win" modem but will get back to the supplier as the only info I have is "Data/Fax/Voice, V90/K56" and the install CD only states 3.1/95/98/NT/multichipsets)
Open a terminal, switch to root and run /sbin/lspci. Post the output to this list. Someone will be able to tell you if your modem stands any chance of working.
Yast, will not open from the "Yast" button(locks up) only from "Terminal Emulation". gets as far as the "install patches" screen and will display the floppy contents and set up a /tmp/flp***, then nothing, no messages. Can't install the kpackages patch so no messages.
Odd. Post this in a separate message to this list. Maybe one of the SuSE guys will help.
Included progs:- All the games will run, but I don't want any of them. Most other progs, either absolutely nothing or a "cannot execute" message
Assuming you are attempting to run them from the KDE menu, I can only assume you didn't install them. What option did you choose when installing? "Install just about everything" or one of the others? If you want something specific to run, post a request to this list naming it. Someone will tell you which package you need to install to make it work.
Here in a nutshell is the source of my frustration, and all I really wanted to do was to load some of the Ham Radio progs from CD3 and use the sound card for signal conditioning and decoding :-((
Walk before you can run is the lesson here. If you want the power of Linux to do this stuff, you have to learn how to control it. The biggest mistake that Linux newbies make is assuming Linux is just Windows without the crashes and with more powerful applications. This isn't the case, yet. If you follow this post up, post your questions to the list as new individual messages.
