[opensuse] smartctl and too high temperature?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi list, I have 2 WD S-ATA drives in my PC, one WDC WD2500JD-00H Rev: 08.0 and one WDC WD2500KS-00M Rev: 02.0. The later of them shows quite a weird behaviour sometimes. this drive seems to have 2 sensors for temperature: # the first drive hellmsklamm:~ # smartctl -A -d ata /dev/sda | grep -i temperature 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 101 095 000 Old_age Always - 49 # the second drive hellmsklamm:~ # smartctl -A -d ata /dev/sdb | grep -i temperature 190 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 044 044 045 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 56 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 094 094 000 Old_age Always - 56 Today a popup came up in KDE, telling me, that sdb had a temperature of 190°C. Anyone experiencing the same/similar behaviour and/or knowing, how to solve this? (No, the drive can't have this temperature, I would've burned my finger badly when touching *g*) Regards, Chris - -- http://rauchs-home.de - home of yet another suse repository ;) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFF/FZbayhvFxrDZlkRAowgAJoDcAqX7bLFlc0ea9cEgDW9Rr0/VwCeI3i2 SJC+SMsjzxZ3vGOXP0WR7VI= =yfaU -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Chris, Read the man-page of "smartd"; the -I options tells you how to suppress device attributes 190 and 194. You really don't want to be warned that your harddrive is warming up. Thanks for the pointer, should have read this before. I've adjusted my smartd.conf and until now no popup came up, let's see, if it helped :)

Hi, while imho 56 degrees Celsius is definitely "too hot" for a disk, it would be interesting if this is the permanent temperature of your disk during the day or just a peak temperature during high load. also interesting might be, whether this high temperature just came up recently or has been there "from the start". In any case you should asap check/repair/clean/enhance..... your cooling system. For comparison, on my main system, my ide harddisk peaks at 42 degrees Celsius during summer time. On my old celeron 500 it never ever exceeds 38 degrees Celsius. I use this system for testing prurposes. Note: This is the disk temperature AFTER I made it "quiet on a shoestring" by using a larger 80mm CPU fan and "violently" running both fans for CPU and PSU at a reduced voltage of 7 Volts. Also please note that I am living in Germany where external temperatures are rather modest, most of the time. Btw. for a permanent graphical overview of disk and system temperatures, I prefer to use ksensors on my main desktop. That apparently can also include smartctl data from the disk(s), at least on my system. For the Celeron 500, which runs headless without a screen and does not support KDE, I use xsensors remotely, but this does not show disk temperatures, so I am running smartctl there, according to the sample that you provided. regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you like technical papers, you might find this one interesting: <http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~gurumurthi/papers/tos06.pdf>. This paper suggests a maximum internal temperature for modern, high-performance disk drives of about 55°C. In particular, they note that if only the spindle motor and voice-coil motor (the head positioning motor) are considered, a maximum operating temperature of 45°C is obtained but by factoring in the heat generation of the internal electronics, anothe 10°C is added. I haven't studied it closely, but it's interesting to look at their extrapolations of drive temperatures over the future given the anticipated growth in drive capacity and speed. It appears some design changes will be needed.
...
regards Eberhard

I have restructured my workstation some weeks ago. My disks now have a temperature of 35°C with room temperature of 22°C. These two disks are combined as software RAID 1. Both are now in S-ATA Hotplug cases in two 5,25" mountings at the top of the case. the case has only 3 fans in total, one 120mm at the front, one 120mm in the power supply and one huge CPU cooler (AC Freezer 64 Pro). Mainboard & CPU temperature is at 37°C.

out of my curiosity: What Case Make and Type are you using? I am looking for something that can accomodate a 120cm fan at the front. Thanks much Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It's an MS-Tech LC-45 in black[1]. It already comes with the 120mm fan at the front.
Thanks much Eberhard
