I have done nothing to any setting, which really makes it irritating. the problems are multiple: at the kdm screen, i can click on any user on the left, but not to change the desktop, "shutdown" or "go". also on neither text field I use XFce4, and i'm getting one left click, then that button stops working. button 2 & 3 do not work at all in "failsafe" I can load thunderbird, and teh left button works fine (again not 2 & 3) until I type something. if I open anew window in tb, the pointer is obviously on the window below, i must close the lower window (and then after the new window is closed reload tb) the pointer moves by it's self up to the upper left corner. Apparently you have it misconfigured. The simplest way is to run YaST/Harware/Select Mouse. If you have the specs for your thinkpad, you should be able to select the right protocol..
