Hi, I'm downloaded the last version of SuSE 7.3 on a french FTP site and I have now two questions : - first, I'm surprising but the entire distribution take a 11,6 Go on hard drive !! I want to record this distribution on CD or DVD but I don't know how to separate the packages ?.. Have you got an idea please ? - in second, what's the difference between the "full-names" directory and the "suse" directory ? Thank's a lot for your answers -- Cordialement Hervé Ballans CNRS - LPS
I quickly abandoned downloading the 7.3 distribution
to disk because of the huge volume it eats up on HD.
I assume you tried to download the entire distribution
as a tar file. It seams downloading as a tar file is
not smart enough to *not* resolve links! On the ftp
server there are entire directories and RMP packages
that are links to other files/directories, but during
ftp these are resolved and re-ftped all over again.
This is very wasteful.
Guys, any way to get ftp to *not* resolve links?
Babu

Use mirror perl script, package "mirror" in SuSE. babu walad wrote:

mirror perl script does not work with ftp.suse.com on re-getting files. mirror uses REST command, which ftp.suse.com does not support. -Kastus

Of course it does. It is a part of the ftp protocol. Try it! The problem with mirror must be something else. I'm guessing server overload. //Anders

It's not a server overload. Let me refer to this message by Christopher Mahmood: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2002-Jan/2242.html May I qoute this part of the message: > Anyone have any ideas what else might be wrong? Here's wget's output: > /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_7.3/experimental ... done. > ==> PORT ... done. ==> REST 3317368 ... done. > ==> RETR kdebase3-2.91-4.rpm ... > Error in server response, closing control connection. > Retrying. You need to use REGET, not a REST with the byte offset. e.g., ftp -a ftp.suse.com cd pub get ls-Ral.txt ^C 426 Transfer aborted. Data connection closed. reget ls-Ral.txt local: ls-Ral.txt remote: ls-Ral.txt I believe Christopher Mahmood knows more about ftp.suse.com -Kastus

I don't suppose you even bothered reading the last sentence above, let alone following its suggestion. (Hint: What I meant when I said "it's part of the ftp protocol" was that it's very possible to do it on the command line. ftp is a text based protocol from the start. All commands possible can be given from a command line based client) //Anders

Thank you for the hint, Anders. What I meant was that REST command does not work on ftp.suse.com. I meant that particular ftp server and mirror perl script included in SuSE distro. Mirror uses REST, and not REGET, and this makes mirror script unusable against ftp.suse.com. -Kastus

This is a problem, I found out the other day the ftp.kde.org also has the same problem and I can't use wget on it either. It's a big pian.

Since you're obviously quite incapable of reading english I'm stopping this debate here.
Hello all, As an addition to this: I tried several times to do an install over the network, via ftp of Suse 7.3 x86. Yast failed all the times when doing the fdisk !!! Failed means it just ended with an error, sorry I haven't written down this, and then send me back in the first menu ... (The error was some error code in some Yast source code line no. xxx) I booted from floppy0, and then load the floppy network modules. Anybody else tested this ? --- Regarding the original email I never tried this. how about would be possible to do a network install aka Jumpstart in Solaris. thanks, stefan On Tue, 22 Jan 2002, Herve Ballans wrote:
