[S.u.S.E. Linux] Further to Printing Problem in 5.2
I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear the first time. The behavior when using "lpr filename" or "lpr -Pqueuename filename" is the error described below. When I try to print either ASCII or PS via the installed APSfilter, I get the message "getport: Unknown host 'BeagleDog' " BeagleDog is my machine name in /etc/HOSTNAME. Using a new and simplified printcap without the APSfilter gives the same results. I included the info on stairstepping just to show that the printer is connected to /dev/lp1 and is functioning. What I can't understand is how a "hostname" gets involved in the lpr or lpd processes. There's no remote printer physically, nor is one defined in printcap. -- Howard Arons -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Is there anything like a Red Hat contrib ftp for SuSE? I am just installing a Red Hat slrn-pull rpm, but it's not a good fit on SuSE 5.2. Thanks, Dwight -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
THe RedHat RPMS are glibc based and if you try to build then on the SuSE sys I don't think it'll work. Slak packs are fine though. YOu might want to try either finding a SuSE proggie you like for this or building one from source. Also checkout freshmeat they have a decent software archive you can search through to see if you see something to your liking.

FYI Red Hat maintains a vast repository of rpms contributed by users in two main sections--one libc based and compatible with RH 4.2 and the other glibc based and compatible with RH 5.0. Theoretically, all of the libc rpms could be installed on S.u.S.E. However, I wouldn't advise it as the S.u.S.E. and Red Hat directory schemas for installing and library access are quite different. My original question was whether a repository of *user contributed* rpms exists somewhere for S.u.S.E. If it does not yet exist, it would certainly be worthwhile to create one. Amen. As I made the move from RH5.0, I was looking for the same thing. This would indeed be a good idea. -Charlie -- WWW: <A HREF="http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~cbebber"><A HREF="http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~cbebber</A">http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~cbebber</A</A>> PGP: 768/2F9B4879 35 93 D1 42 D0 45 44 CB E7 8F 64 37 FB FD 54 5C "If you want to travel around the world and be invited to speak at a lot of different places, just write a Unix operating system." You're right of course and I TOTALLY misunderstood your first question ... I knew about the other RPMS (FYI!) but as I said I misunderstood you or whatever. I don't think SuSE has any kind of user repository though it would be nice if they did... maybe this will spark such a thing Dwight Johnson wrote:

Greetings! Thanks for all of your input. We have been discussing this idea internally over the past few weeks. The only problem is that we've been burned in the past with "incoming" stuff on our ftp site. Not-so-nice folks have used it to distribute porn pix and such. While we deliberate you can gladly send contributions directly to Bodo at: bb@suse.com Thanks to all of your for your interest and ideas! Sincerely, James Gray

Since a publicly accessible incoming dir on ftp.suse.com would quickly fill with warez and porn, perhaps interested members of this mailing list could contact someone at SuSE about getting limited access passwords when they would like to post something to the ftp. I don't know how difficult it would be to set up, but I send Bodo, Hubert, or whoever a request for access to upload, they email me a password, and within 24 hours my access expires. That way the people at SuSE know who has access at any given time, and if someone does abuse the privilege it would be known who it was, their access would only be temporary so the damage would be neglible, and then they could be blacklisted from ftp access. I don't know if that is feasible, but it's one way it could be handled. James Gray wrote:

I favor the Roach Motel approach. Incoming has write only permissions for anonymous ftp: drw--w--w- ftp users ......... Then the contrib directory itself has read only privileges. This way warez and porn check in but they can't check out! The contrib admnistrator takes the good stuff and moves it to contrib and deletes the rest. Hi! Trying to kill the keyboard, dwj@aaronsrod.com produced:

Surely you mean drw--w--wt (and maybe that x as well, you may want/need to enter the directory.) However, that does allow me to read files ... it just won't give a file listing. Maybe use a link that changes for every user or upload or give every upload a randomized unique and non-guessable name? Or mail to suse-ftp will put that file into a secured directory from where it could be moved to contrib? Not that I have any experience with owning a ftp server ... I even don't know if my ideas are feasible, but it should be somehow possible with advanced magic, aka a perl script (even if that meant writing a small ftp-server in perl ... but is that feasible??) -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". I just created this directory: <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/incoming"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/incoming</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/incoming</A</A>>, it's write only, so you want be able to cd into it or ls its contents. I'll scan it's contents and put them in a 'contrib' directory if they are usefull. For everyone's info, the problem described below has been solved with the kind and knowledgeable help of Herr Klaus Wagner (franken.de). The lpd is a network oriented daemon, and needs a resolvable localhost name. Correcting /etc/hosts to read 127.0.0.1 localhost BeagleDog ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ olved the problem instantly.
