Happy New Year! I downloaded the Linux version of RealPlayer and followed there instructions: Once you've successfully completed the download, you will be ready to install the RealPlayer. To do this, you must make the installer executable and then run it: Example: chmod u+x rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin ./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin But I ran into problems: # chmod u+x rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin Cosmos3:/home/adriel # ./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified Error: Can't open display: :0 Can anyone help me out here? Thanks, Jerome

You are root, trying to connect to a non-root owned xserver. (su - root probably was issued in a shell). Either log in root and run it (not recommended) or run it as a user. You'be been working too hard at this... Take the rest of the year off. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I tried installing as a normal user and it worked. What does xhost + localhost do in this instance? Jerome

Forget about "xhost +localhost". Use "sux" instead of "su" and you won't need the dangerous xhost. ("man xhost" will give you more info.) -- A.M.

Interesting - my system has xhost (as most do!) but no manpage for xhost. Is there a version of "sudo" that avoids the need for "xhost +localhost"? Paul Abrahams

On 9.0: $ rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/man/man1/xhost.1x.gz XFree86-man-4.3.0.1-21

"sux" and "ssh -X" are the replacements. See also the security section of "man xterm". -- A.M.
