Installing ZIP Drive under SuSE 8.n
Has anyone reading this note installed a Zip drive in a computer on
which SuSE 8.n or similarly aged Linux was already installed? What
sort? Will YAST spot it and install it, or must I recompile the kernel
and install by hand?
Thanks

Try inserting a disk, reboot then type: /sbin/fdisk -l Your Zip should show-up as hdd, hde, or something similar -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@CONSOLIDATEDLINT.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

I had one in 8.0 but haven't reinstalled it. If it's a parallel port Zip drive you may have to use (as root) # modprobe imm to be able to use it at all. If that works, the drive should be available on /dev/sda1. Try # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt to mount it. I think the process is easier if you have a USB zip drive. There are probably some instructions on http://www.tldp.org/ I created /media/zip as a directory and put the following line in /etc/fstab /dev/sda1 /media/zip auto rw,noauto, user, exec 0 2 In the end I gave up using it because rsync over an isdn line is more reliable, and faster except for very large files. -- JDL Non enim propter gloriam, diuicias aut honores pugnamus set propter libertatem solummodo quam Nemo bonus nisi simul cum vita amittit.

I have parallel and ide examples, and for the last couple of releases the default SuSE install has found and set them up without any intervention. HTH Fergus

Yes, on suse 8.1, a parallel port, 250 Mb type.
Will YAST spot it and install it,
Not that I remember.
or must I recompile the kernel
No.
and install by hand?
Almost: "modprobe imm". I guess it could be automated, but I haven't bothered. There is a howto. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
