re: [SLE] resize partition
Hi!
I have Suse Linux 8.0. I wanna know if there is a general way, that works on majority of linux system, to resize partition without lost of the data on it. I have some partitions on my system. A partition is too large and another is too small because it will be full soon. I want to make one smaller and the other larger but the 2 partitions have data on it and I don't want to lose this data.
Thanks for your help or your reference to a document that can help me.
The only general way is to backup the partitions, delete them, recreate them at the new size, and restore. Any approach like partition magic, or xfs_growfs, etc. will be filesystem specific and you did not say what FS you are using. Even if the FS supports resizing, you have to have it sitting on a logical partition, not a physical partition. (In my experience, only Partition Magic works with physical partitions.) That is one of the major reasons for LVM. It allows partitions to be resized. Then xfs_growfs as an example can cause the FS to be extended to utilize the new space. I don't know if any of the Linux FS have a shrink capability. I also don't know if partition magic has any Linux FS support or not. Partition Magic can change the size of and move any physical or logical partiton. It must know how to work with the FS. It does know ext2. It has no problem shrinking an ext2 file system. I've done that many times. (Greg, unfortunately it does not work on an Alpha :-) On 6 Sep 2002 at 11:36, Greg Freemyer wrote:

There is also "parted". It can do something with various linux filesystems. I have not been using it so far, so you might want to check on their homepage and see what it can do. Praise
I'd like to hear people's experiences with parted. We are having a Linux installfest in October. I normally bring Partition Magic, but if parted works well, then I can use that. On 6 Sep 2002 at 19:28, Praise wrote:
