With all the talk about apt-get and synaptic, I decided to try it out. So, I found apt4rpm on sourceforge. Downloaded the rpm and .... error: failed dependencies: apt is needed by apt4rpm-0.50-1 libapt is needed by apt4rpm-0.50-1 Ok... so it's not a complete package. I'll just get the dependencies... So, I looked on the same page where I got apt4rpm, and the only other binary was an add-ons package. That did not have libapt or apt. So, I looked for mention in the SLE archives. What I found said that all the necessary packages live on the apt4rpm page at sourceforge. So, I downloaded and installed the source rpm, which was the only other downloadable on that page. No apt or libapt in there, either. So, I went back to sourceforge and searched "libapt" with their search option. Not found. Is there a binary rpm or a source rpm somewhere that contains apt and libapt that doesn't need to be compiled? Failing that, do I just grab the latest version from the Debian site, compile, and that will magically work with apt4rpm? Well, assuming that I have (or can find) whatever compiler version it demands... Also, www.suse.com is not found for the past four hours. Out of business? Or, a lo-o-o-ong maintenance window? Another long night with nothing to show for it. Ya-a-awn. :-) Gotta get up and go to work in two hours. Ugh. /kevin

~ this had me confused too :( My fault, B'coz I did not read Richard Bos' clear instructions, and take note :- ............................................................. *** Please note, the package apt-devel-0.5.4 replaces rpm package libapt-0.3.19.*** ............................................. SO ~ the mystery package is IN *apt-devel* cheers .................

Oh.......... I read something like that, and I don't see "...supersedes rpm package such'n'such". I just see "If you happen to install the development rpm, then be aware that libapt-xyz will be replaced by it." It never even occurred to me that I *NEEDED* the devel package. Probabaly because most apps that I use are at 1.0 or later, so any package with "devel" in it is for the not-yet-stable next version. Well then... I'm betting it's still not straightforward. If I go find that devel rpm and install it, I'll probably still need to make a link, pretending that it is the libapt listed in the failed dependencies for apt4rpm... yes? And what about "apt" itself? Is that in some third renamed package, somewhere else? Thanks, /kevin

~ well, maybe the ubiquitous Murphy { of Murphy's Law } is away on holiday . . . it all went smoothly, without need to make links . apt-devel-0.5.4 works miracles :) -- best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

Try it here: http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/apt-0.5.4/ --Kees
