Re: [opensuse] 12.2 troubles
This (didn't show in my initial web search for usb bootable utilities) below looked simplest, so I ask Google for imagewriter, who gives me both the launchpad.net homepage and a suse installation page telling how to use it for suse. OK! I follow the instructions and reboot. Hooray! the beloved suse installation welcome splash. Ask for installation: get only a 5-field garbled screen, no more activity. Ask for verification: same. Ask for repair: same. Boot from disk: same text-mode as before. Thanks, Carl, but it didn't work for me. Now on to Felix's method as amplified by Per and Lars. His first method using zypper is next. Here's hoping! jp ---- Carl Fletcher <caf4926@gmail.com> wrote:

http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.2/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.2-non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.2/repo/oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.2/repo/non-oss/ If you absolutely can't install 12.2 (even in text mode) I'd consider 12.1 clean install, fully patched. Then change all your repos +add 1 and 'dup' it I've read people getting in a mess with this, related to grub. But theoretically grub should remain in legacy version as it's supported in 12.2 even though grub 2 is default. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

And this was the last tweak I needed. 1. Tried once more with the usb flash drive, but this time I loaded 12.1 onto it. Installed like a charm. I'd try 12.2 again, but don't want to chance more of this. Was my 12.2 flash experience unique, or have others had this problem? 2. Started up 12.1. Looked at repositories with yast. All back to 12.1. 3. Using Carl's list above, deleted everything, added list. 4. zypper dup. A couple of hours later, all done. 5. Removed flash drive, rebooted. 6. Same 5-part garbled screen. After ten seconds or so, 12.2 continued to boot. 7. Now writing this from my brand-new 12.2 :-). Now to rebuild my system. Where is Kompozer? I see Quanta is still at kde3; I substituted Kompozer, and like it, but now can't find it at suse any more. Thanks, all. I now have three ways to install a new system when suse moves on. The old dvd way, flash drive, and clean out repositories, then zypper dup. jp
