YaST Online Update: please update only to something new
Hi, I've been using SuSE YOU regularly, ever since installing SuSE Linux 7.2 (Professional i386). I've noticed a minor annoyance. Every time I run the update, SuSE YOU retrieves and selects the same old descriptions, as well as new ones. By old, I mean descriptions where the new version is either the same as the installed version, or for options such as XFree86 and KDE, where the "new" version is actually older than the installed version. So I have to manually unselect everything I don't want. Has anyone else seen this annoying behaviour? I have a suggestion for SuSE: o For package descriptions where the new version's version number, date and size is exactly the same as the old version, default selection should be off. o For package descriptions where the new version is obviously later then the old version, default selection should be on. o For all other descriptions where there is an old version of the same package, default selection should be "?", drawing the user's attention, but not installing the "new" version unless the user confirms. With this change, use of the manual YOU will be smoother. Also, with the automatic update, if you make the change suggested above and then have the automatic update only download and install the default selections as defined above, this should be the right thing to do in most cases. As far as I can tell, right now the automatic update downloads and installs everything, whether there is an old version or not, and whether or not the old version is the same as the new version. That's why I have never gone past the first step with automatic update. Maybe the automatic update has been fixed. I haven't looked at it in a month or so. Best regards
