If you have a 32bit system, then use /usr/lib/vlc instead of /usr/lib64/vlc in the above.

If vlc starts after this (in GNOME), it might be useful also to lock the vlc packages to the present installed versions using zypper al, e.g. sudo zypper al vlc-noX etc.

Hello Atri, I finally solved (partially) my problem using VLC in Gnome 3, also if VLC is still pretty unstable and keeps crashing during its operation if I select some functions of its menu. It was a bit strange the way I solved at least the boot of the application since I had to install an old package which was included in openSUSE 11 release: gtkstyle-0.0.20090313-4.8.x86_64.rpm which I downloaded from http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.8.6/SuSE/11.1/x86_64/ Second, I had to select a different skin because the default one always caused crash at the start of the application, producing a segmentation. Don't remember if I already told this, but VLC under KDE4.10 works flawlessly then I think it is something related to GTK or libs not fully integrated when I use Gnome.
