[opensuse] Display managers...
Recent versions of openSUSE have been using the sddm display manager as the default one. I think it looks and acts okay. Unfortunately, it does not work with XDMCP. So running rdesktop against such a system is not possible. I need to access the systems via something like rdestop. We have enabled kdm instead. It does work. But I think it is butt ugly. Is it really the case that it should be a gray screen with a gray Gecko? And a field in which you enter the name, and after pressing enter get a new field for the password? And that has a useless (IMHO) console window both during the login and after KDE starts? Not looking very impressive. Perhaps I have missed something that looks better? -- Roger Oberholtzer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I think you did not get kdm. That sounds like the default plain old thing, xdm. Check with "ps afxu | less".

I use lightdm, but I do not know if it supports XDMCP, I have not tried. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

I got all distracted by a file system issue at the same time I was trying this. Alas, kdm was not installed. So it was xdm. I have now installed kdm and it looks better. I just need to verify that XDMCP/rdesktop is working. -- Roger Oberholtzer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Agreed. That does not sound like kdm, that sounds like xdm. On my Leap 42.3 machine, kdm shows an all-black background to the screen. The login credential fields are in the centre of the screen, and there's a large Edison-screw type lightbulb to their right, with the filament forming the glowing green outline of the Geeko chameleon. Above the login credentials is the time and date, at bottom left the session type, and at bottom right a battery indicator. Below the credentials fields are stylised monochrome buttons for Suspend, Restart, Shutdown and Different User. AFAIK that's the latest available kdm. -- Liam Proven - Technical Writer, SUSE Linux s.r.o. I now have this. I like the light bulb. I would like to have the source (meaning whatever is used in the drawing program where it was made) so I could edit the colors and perhaps change the gecko bit. In fact, I would leave the glowing filament gecko and change the reflected gecko into something else. -- Roger Oberholtzer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

you should be able to change kdm's theme with "kcmshell4 kdm" -- opensuse:tumbleweed:20180214 Qt: 5.10.0 KDE Frameworks: 5.42.0 - KDE Plasma: 5.12.0 - kwin 5.12.0 kmail2 5.7.2 - akonadiserver 5.7.2 - Kernel: 4.15.2-1-default - xf86-video-nouveau: 1.0.15 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
