The HOWTO is a good check-list. In particular, make sure you have wireless-tools installed. Try iwconfig. I've linked to the stage you seem to be at (roughly). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Even winmodems show in the output of lspci command run as root in an xterm. Being listed there doesn't mean they are recognized, only that they are seen. Where is that modem connected? Is it a card? It could mean that the modem is not activated in the BIOS setup of the computer or that it's just so odd a win-modem. I've noticed that Compaq/HP tend to use some modems that are somewhat proprietary in nature causing even more problems. The solution? Remove that sucker and toss it in the trashcan right away! If you have a great need for a modem, then purchase a "real" hardware type modem internal or a serial modem external. You'll have far less problems and much better service. Although for the life of me, I don't fully understand your need for a modem at all? This means that I have to agree with M Harris. If you need it buy one USB modem, so you can use it anywhere. I was looking on Google, Intel web site, in /usr/share/pci.ids (that is used by lspci) and kernel sources documentation /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt and I couldn't find anything applicable for modem. What I was looking is similarity with ICH 4,5,6 that have audio and modem in one and this ALSA web page has listed something about ICH southbridge HD-audio and modem: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=vendor-Intel#matrix to find that driver is hda-intel.
