I've been using Suse for quite a while. I don't think it is too much to ask for my dvd and burner to work. Any suggestions on how to make that occur. (Both cdburner and dvd worked fine under 7.3 and continue to work under windows 98) I recently decided to update to 8.1 from 7.3. This was a clean install from a dvd drive. The system has a dvd as hdc and a burner as hdd. I found the note about 8.1 and ide drives (whose bright idea was that anyway?) and did indeed make the modifications to the sysconfig/kernal file. and updated the initrd. INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs cdrom ide-cd ide-scsi" my etc/fstab is. fstab /dev/hdb3 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 /dev/hdb1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda1 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,iocharset=iso8859-1,code=437 0 0 /dev/hdb2 swap swap pri=42 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0 /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0 I've tried variations in the fstab of /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd for the cdrom and dvd also grub has the following lines in it (any real reason to use grub rather than lilo?). title linux kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb3 hdd=ide-scsi vga=788 initrd (hd1,0)/initrd -- Dr. Roy F. I undertand that for the burner you need ide-scsi.
grub has the following lines in it (any real reason to use grub rather than lilo?).
You don't need to run lilo after you change anything in the kernel or ramdisk. It's automatic.
title linux kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb3 hdd=ide-scsi vga=788 initrd (hd1,0)/initrd
I supose that is correct. What do you see in the /var/log/boot.msg file? It should detect the burner somewhere as a scsi. Something like this: <6>scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices <4> Vendor: IDE Model: DVD-ROM 16X Rev: 1.06 <4> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 <4> Vendor: MITSUMI Model: CR-48X8TE Rev: 1.1E <4> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Alternatively, run: nimrodel:~ # scan_scsi.linux Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 CD-ROM -> /dev/sg0 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00 CD-ROM -> /dev/sg1 Then, with the above, I know that the recorder is the second scsi device. Thus, I make the following symlinks: cer@nimrodel:~> l /dev/cdr* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2002-11-07 19:33 /dev/cdrecorder -> sr1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2002-11-07 19:37 /dev/cdrom -> scd1 In the fstab, I just refer to /dev/cdrom or recorder. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Alternatively, run:
nimrodel:~ # scan_scsi.linux Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 CD-ROM -> /dev/sg0 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00 CD-ROM -> /dev/sg1

This is great info, but my problem borders on this, but not quit. I can mount data CD's and work just fine with the following: /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd -> /dev/hdc The problem is that I cannot play any music CD's (or rip them for that matter. when I ran the command above (scan_scsi.linux) my output was as follows: Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 CD-ROM -> /dev/sg0 Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00 CD-ROM -> /dev/sg1 /dev/sg0 above if it matches the ide master, is my dvd-rom. the /dev/sg1 would then be my cdburner. If I follow the login above my DVD player should be /dev/sr0, and my Burner should be /dev/sr1? My fstab looks like this: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 The weird thing is that I can mount Data Cd's properly, and read their files with my current config. -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16! Are you trying to mount audio CD's if that is thte case no you do not mount them to play -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

Hold on, music CDs are not mounted, they do not have a filesystem. On the other hand, konkeror has a way of showing audio cds as if they had a filesystem on it, and copy/rip more or less transparently - but I don't use konkeror.

But you symlinked your dvd to hdc above :-?

Right now I don't remember the difference between sr and sg, it's early hours here O:-)

Yes, of course. As I said, audio cds can not be mounted. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
