Danny, Speaking of getting into habits, and also (apparently) liking shortcuts, have you ever used "ZZ" instead of "(shift):(unshift)wq" ? I discovered that with (g)vim many years ago and fell in love with it. I later found that it also works with the wimpy vi on Solaris, as well as vi on the MKS Toolkit on Windows. I you haven't, give it a try. Jim - who occasionally puts "ZZ" in his text when he forgets to hit Esc first.

ZZ is kinda hidden down at the bottom of the keyboard, requiring me to bend my hands up a little, wheras <esc>:wq doesn't require quite as much bending... I'll give it a shot, though. Right now, I'm still being excited about the ability to mark locations in the file - mostly just "m" followed by a letter, and then ` followed by that letter to jump to the mark, though the other mark stuff's semi handy as well. Next on my list is trying to work code folding into normal usage. The tips section on vim.org rocks. Some of those people get way complicated with their macros, though... --Danny, saying "those people" as if others are somehow more weird than he. :)
