Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Partition Strategy
Ron Lavoie
I have about 720 mg available for Linux over hda (a 2.1gig Seagate) and hdb (a 1.2 gig whatever). I can allocate partition sizes pretty much as I please.
My sense is that I should devote a 100 meg partition in hda2 to root /, another 64 megs to a swap partition on hda, and about 560 megs on hdb to /usr.
I have two questions:
1) Is this an optimal strategy? The system will be single user, and will not be used as a server. 2) When installing, how do I get /usr into a different partition/physical drive? Or do I have to move the filesystem after installation? I don't quite get the concept here. Will I have to mount hdb2 by hand every time I boot?
Oops, that's three #-).
SuSE allows you to have mutiple options from installation. I choose the "Premium Installation, and backout any apps not desired. My present scheme is : wdm:/usr/src # df Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on /dev/sdb1 397500 57986 318984 15% / /dev/sdb2 1982006 779423 1100132 41% /usr /dev/sdb4 1547351 107750 1359627 7% /home db3 is my swap of course. You could have more partitions of course, but because this installation is temporary, waiting for 5.2, I used just these 3. If you don't separate /usr from /, then depending on what packages you install, /usr takes up most of the space in / when it's included. I usually have /home, /opt and /usr in different physical partitions. /opt for Netscape, Applixware, etc., that likes /opt. Others use /usr/local instead of /opt. /home separate for my personal work I like to have there. /usr separate due to the size. A clean minimal install in / should have about 200megs, a swap partition. I've found that the saying, 'Only the Experienced Walk With a Limp', is the path I've had to take, due to the many ways of setting up a Linux box. The best advice I give, is get a big HD, lots of RAM and a first rate video card & monitor, and you'll have fun.
