Seems like these days more distributions are adopting the Live Installer method as an option as a quick-and-easy install. Obviously there are many advantages to this, and some scenarios that it avoids. For example, never tried out Linux and want to try SUSE Linux? Sure, there's a completely painless way -- try out the Live DVD that installs absolutely nothing to your HD permanently. Play with it for hours, and then finally reach the conclusion that you want it on your computer permanently, installed to hard disk. Oops! You have to download another DVD or 5 CDs (or just three, arguably) and burn them, ouch. There are certainly other cases where it'd be damn useful, but that's the most clear one in my mind. It would be just the DVD I could happily always throw out to people for them to try. Problems? I really wouldn't have any idea how it would be implemented exactly, and as aka_druid notes on IRC -- talking about it is easy. Perhaps some more knowledgable with the idea could give some input. Thoughts? Ideas? Regards, apokryphos.
A very useful case would be to check h/w compatibility. I often have family and friends who have very old, very corrupted installations of Win98/WinMe on P2/P3 class hardware. All they want to do is surf the web and write emails - if I could easily check that the h/w is compatible and install off of one disc, it would be quite a time saver.

It would be. There is hardware compatibility list on http://en.opensuse.org/HCL It is project in initial stages so if you have knowledge of some hardware that is working add it to the list. The fact that it is old hardware is irrelevant as many Linux/SUSE users started experimenting with machines that were sitting in the corner, obsolete and unused. -- Regards, Rajko.
I am *very* interested in creation of such a DVD. the livedvd seems to work no? why do you think it is bad? can you give facts? so far i would say: "because unionFS sounds leet" for proper discussions you should provide reasons for your statements. thanks in advance darix -- openSUSE - SUSE Linux is my linux openSUSE is good for you www.opensuse.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

Hi Darix ! LiveDVD works but - poorly - I'm not satisfied with it. 1) UnionFS will enable us, users - to install software even when running from ROM media - such as a DVD-ROM. 2) I don't want to download 2 DVDs - 1 for Live/Test/Rescue and 1 for normal install. If possible, they should be united into 1 DVD. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

that sounds stupid. unless you have tons of ram to waste. :)

actually ... it would be suboptimal in both cases either you have to few software to test or to install. download the live dvd and test it. than take the net install image and install with it. than you only download the packages you really need. darix -- openSUSE - SUSE Linux is my linux openSUSE is good for you www.opensuse.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

That version has an option to install? (doesn't say that there). I heard the current Live DVD doesn't have an install option, but that there is in fact one that is given out at fairs (mastered for 10.1, too) but it's not available online nor for purchase, since it's 4+ gigs. :( Is the problem meant to be that they can't afford the bandwidth? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

In fact, I had always the feeling that the 10.0 live was installable, but there was then so many options (eval...) that I may be wrong :-( sorry jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

As an addon tip to this thread: I prefered to download and install the whole SuSE 10.1 DVD (3.5 GB), because my previous bad experience with all too slow download speed trying Internet installation during the beta period. I've also downloaded the Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.0.6 beta DVD iso (2.5GB), which was based on an interesting new principle. It's a combined Live/Install DVD. That is, after playing with the live dvd, it was possible to install Ubuntu/Gnome 2.14 with a new GUI tool from a running system, and thereafter with Synaptic add KDE and Xfce4 and other packages with useable speed from Internet. I think it is something to seriously think about for 10.2. That way you have a 6CD installable solution and a Live/Installable DVD5. I believe that is the power of Knoppix. You can try it and if you like it, install it. -- houghi http://houghi.org http://www.plainfaqs.org/linux/ http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html

I've been told that it was already mastered for 10.1, but that it was unfortunately 4+ gigs (which is why it wasn't online, I think). Many distros have it now, and working it well; Mepis/Knoppix both who have had it for ages, and Ubuntu/Kubuntu now; though it's not my preferred distribution, it's the fastest and most convenient installation I've done. It's also the perfect idea for new users. Try this out, if you like it, install. Needless to say, I think the SUSE live CD could bring quite a few people in 8). Yes I do - currently running 1GB of RAM with perspective towards 2GB.

Do you think we will duplicate each software package twice ? Nonsense - There are 3 ways to solve the problem: 1) we could put a *lot* of "standard" packages into liveDVD + RPMs for install version on the same media. 2) Better yet - develop some kind of technology that can take installed RPMs and convert them back to installtion RPMs. Everything is possible. 3) make a single compressed image that contains all software (like Knoppix) that can also be installable. After all - both Knoppix & Ubuntu Dapper Drake solved the problem with decision # 3. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

This technology already exists (rpm --repackage option). Andreas Hanke --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

When the rpm database is included, it would be the same as a basic installation, software could be uninstalled and updated like in a "normal" installation. I think most people use a KDE or GNOME standardinstallation as base for the system. This also could be on a live CD and just copied on the Harddisk. I think this could improve installation speed, too. -- Machs gut | http://www.iivs.de/schwinde/buerger/tremmel/ | http://packman.links2linux.de/ Manfred | http://www.knightsoft-net.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org
