CD writer Teac 524E
Short question, I would like to buy a CD writer that is good and actually works with linux. A test review in a magazine rated Teac CD524E and Mitsumi CR4809 as the top 2. My preference goes to the Teac, does anyone have experience with this CD -writer on Suse? I searched the list archives and the net, but there is hardly any info (at least for the Teac: http://www.teac.com/DSPD/24X10X40_Retail_Kit.htm) -- Thanks in advance, Richard Bos For those without home the journey is endless
Richard:
I've had excellent luck with the Yamaha CRW-4416S CD-R (SCSI ),
and with the TEAC CDRW 241040X (IDE). Both write CD-Rs just
fine with SuSE 7.3 Pro, and the TEAC has been verified with WinXP
Home.
Looks like this is the same TEAC that you're considering. I got mine
at Price Club a few months ago.

Absolutely stay away from the Mitsumi drives as I have tested two of the CR480X models and both failed to work! Mitsumi has apparently decided not to support Linux in any way and their new devices prove that fact! The Teac sounds very close to my new Acer 2410A drive, which works flawlessly. It is a 24x10x40 cdrw and if this one is available, do not hesitate to get one! The Teac may be the same drive though as there are not that many makers of cdroms in the world anyway. You might check the SuSE hardware database also as to the Teac drives tested. Thank you all for your responses. Thanks for the Mitsumu tip. I remember messages about it, but I thought they were actually positive. Humm it seems the other way around.... The test mentions the Acer 2010a. If compared to the Teac 524 it looks as follows: errorcorrection errorcorrection noise excentric cd [errors left] [time] [dBa] acer 2010 440 47 min 14 teac 524 183 23 min 2 (two) So I really hope the Teac works with Linux, as it seems to be a very nice one... In the hardware support database is stated that the support is full. That actually means that it works, I assume (just to be clear ...;) http://hardwaredb.suse.de/connectuserServer.php?manufactor=&device=&LANG=en_UK&subdevice=2,4&offset=180&categorie=262&count=228&typ=easySearch Op maandag 18 februari 2002 04:06, schreef Patrick:

I have a TEAC CD-W54E (or CD-W54EK) CD writer. It's writes at 4x and reads at 12x, but the quality is excellent and it was very easy to install. TEAC provided a good quality EIDE cable and audio cable with the unit. The only problem I have is with my ancient system BIOS: occasionally it fails to recognise the CD writer on boot up, delaying boot by about 40 seconds. But Linux recognises the writer every time. The price was good too. About 80 euros in the UK. JDL Richard Bos wrote:
