[opensuse] adding trash can to KDE4 folder desktop
Hello: I would like to add the Trashcan to my KDE4 desktop which is set to folder layout. I read somewhere to add Trashcan widget but it's not what I want. I cannot move it and it is not only a simple icon it has those tool icons at the right side when I hover it. Is it possible to add a normal Trash can? Yes. Right-click on the desktop and select "Create New"->"Shortcut to address (URL)", and enter "trash:/" as address/URL (you can enter whatever you want for the filename. Or just drag the trashcan from dolphin or the K-menu and drop it on your desktop. Right-click on the icon then and choose "Properties" if you want to change the icon and/or name. If you use a default desktop (with no icons, only widgets) you have to right-click inside the folderview widget. I didn't mention this because Istvan Gabor wrote he is using the folderview layout. Or navigate to the Desktop folder in Dolphin or Konqueror and right-click there (this works in any folder though). Yes, but that will add the trashcan *widget*, and not create a shortcut icon. Istvan Gabor explicitely wrote he doesn't want that. Btw, it's called "Add Widgets" in the english version... ;) Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I yet need the Trashcan widget because the link to url icon does not show the state of the Trashcan (empty or not). OK, I added the Trashcan widget. How can I change its look? I would like to change the font color of the widget name and also disable the background of the name. I would like to make it look as other regular icons on my desktop. Is it possible? Yes. It's just a normal icon, like any other. It does have an "Empty Trash" right-click action though. But it is possible to specify a different icon via an "EmptyIcon=" line in the .desktop file. I just found this, have a look: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=686668#p686668 I tried that and it seems to work.

It follows the plasma theme. You cannot change it separately. But at least here on my system, it does look the same like the icons in the folderview. Did you change their appearance maybe? An alternative maybe would be to add it to the panel instead of the desktop? OK. What do you mean under .desktop file? I could not find any [Tt]rash.desktop or[Tr]ashcan.desktop in my system. Or you mean the file/url link I made in my ~/Desktop folder which contains the link to trash:/? It has this content: [Desktop Entry] Icon=user-trash-full Type=Link URL[$e]=trash:/ I changed this to: [Desktop Entry] Icon=user-trash-full EmptyIcon=user-trash Type=Link URL[$e]=trash:/ This resulted in changing the icon to empty Trashcan even if it has some content. ??

I will look into this.

They look different for me. Normal icon has white colored name without background, widget has black colored name with (ugly) background. Here is a screenshot: http://i62.tinypic.com/2cd7s41.png Style: plastik, colors: openSUSE, icon theme: oxygene, desktop theme: air By the way, if I add a widget to the desktop it will be placed over (cover) existing icons. I consider this a bug. Icons and widgets should be placed to empty areas, not on top of other items. I works fine here, it shows the full icon when things are in the trash can. But I'm using the file from that post I linked to now. That post states that the order of the lines seems to be important, so try to use exactly that too. It has "EmptyIcon" *before* "Icon".

My folderview icons (with the default settings) do look the same as your (and my) widget. Again, you probably changed the appearance of the icons in the folderview's settings (text color, changed to white, shadow deactivated). There is no way to configure the Trash widget in a similar way (it just uses the colors defined by the desktop theme). And AFAIK nobody ever asked for that either. As KDE4 is near the end of its life (and the desktop is in feature freeze since over a year already), this will not be added any more now as well. Maybe in Plasma 5... ;)

For plasma there are no icons, only widgets. The "icons" are just some graphics that the folderview widget displays. And you can place widgets on top of each other. So, no bug, but a feature/design decision. Although normally plasma should try to create new widgets in empty areas, and it does unless there is no space or you move it yourself over an existing widget. I have created a new user in openSUSE 13.2 for testing desktop settings only. The only change I made was setting the desktop to folder layout. Now I have default icons like Firefox, KInfoCenter etc on the desktop and a widget (Desktop folder widget?) which has the very same icons. If I create a new icon as Right click -> Create New -> Link to Location (URL)... : File name: Trashcan, URL: trash:/, it places the trashcan icon on the desktop. Bit it won't have the .desktop extension in the Desktop directory while the other icon names have the extension. See the attached image: http://i61.tinypic.com/11mg3ky.png If I rename Trashcan to Trashcan.desktop its name will change both on the desktop and in the Desktop directory (while other icon names have the extension only in the folder but not in the icons on the desktop). You can call it feature if you think it sounds better. (: KDE4 has some of this type of 'features'. Best regards, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ok, you're right. Creating it with "Create New"->"Link to Location (URL)" will not add a .desktop extension, but KDE recognizes it as .desktop file anyway. If you rename it to xxx.desktop in a file manager, it will also show as xxx.desktop on the desktop, that is correct too. But you can get rid of the .desktop extension on the desktop by right-clicking on the icon, choosing "Properties" and editing the name there. This will not change the filename, only the name that is displayed (specified inside the .desktop file). It shouldn't matter at all though whether the file has the .desktop ending or not. This is not Windows...

Well, in the folderview widget, the icons look the same then the trashcan widget. That's what I meant. I don't use the folder layout, so I wasn't aware it has a different default. You can change the icon text settings for the icons on the desktop though, by right-clicking on an empty space and choosing "Folder Settings". Set the icon color to black, and they will look the same as the ones in the folderview and trashcan widgets... But IIUYC, that's not really what you want, as you seem to find it "ugly". Well, try to switch to a desktop theme with white text color then. I don't think there's another way to make them look the same.

Like any other desktop, I suppose... Anyway, just because you don't like it, doesn't make it a bug. It is a bug when something doesn't work as intended (by the developers), or when the way something works makes it impossible to use it. That widgets are not the same as (old-style) desktop icons and don't behave the same either is no bug. And it doesn't really matter what I (or you, for that matter) call it here anyway.
