glibc will be mainstream but not until later this year.
The problem will always be to use the new technology on the exact correct time: After all (or enough) errors are worked out and before your system is (or seems) outdated.
glibc is just primarily for mutiple platforms. I suppose when I start using an DEC/Alpha 1000+MHz box, I'll be glad, but for now, Intel works fine. So no big need for my apps to use glibc. libc is by no means outdated, unless you live in a Red Hat world, which is not the case for all users of Linux.
