"Unable to check for updates."
Hi! I "have" many SuSE boxes with 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 versions. Everyone of them has had lot's of problems trying to contact update service. The icon for the susewatcher is all the time yellow and I always get a message that says: "Unable to check for updates." While I never got these problems before, currently it's about all I get. What's wrong? Something has changed somewhere (outside my boxes)... -- HG
sounds like the particular mirror you use isn't available. try a different one. YOU (suseWatcher) remembers the last one selected B-) On Wednesday 26 January 2005 08:26 am, Hugo wrote:

I checked the ones I have here at work... 9.1 versions used (in YOU) "Germany: SUSE LINUX AG" ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse and the 9.0 versions (totally different list, with only 2 entries) use "http://sdb.suse.de/download" Last succesfull update 22 days ago and the computer is online all the time. For the 9.0 I selected now the other option: "http://sdb2.suse.de/download" ... after a while, I got Authorization-dialog askin for Username and Password! What's this? With empty username and passwd I only got error. Now, the same thing happened for the other option also. Nice one, SuSE! For the 9.1 I selected "Sweden: SUNET" which sould be the closest one (I've had trouble with FUNET, which has sometimes missed some packages). It's now been "Retrieving information about new updates" for 5 minutes. Neither one seems to work. What now? Is this Novell stuff? -- HG

Actually, it was stuck at 0% and now I got "Patch information retrieval failed" This all worked before Novell came into picture... and if I might add (sorry about this, but the whole system is now getting on my nerves) I have never had such problems with MS update! -- HG

No, this is traditional suse stuff. ftp.suse.com is always overloaded. Never use it. And sunet isn't very good either, unless you're on telia broadband (I think they use the same backbone) Rule #1 is always use an http link. http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/suse is usually good sdb and sdb2 are for the SLES Enterprise Server stuff, which is why you get a password dialog. Though I can't for the life of me understand why you see it in 9.0. You should only get those on SLES machines. Did this machine use to be a SLES?

Well, I've never had problems like this before (for about an year now with SuSE). Sunet is in Sweden and I think there is a quite fat pipeline between Sweden and Finland... although might be that there is nowadays equal line to Central Europe also.

I'll try that next.

Er, no. It's a purchased (box with DVD and all) 64bit 9.0 Professional. The first one we've had. There has been no probelms with updates before. I had it on automatic update also. Dunno what's happening. But those are the settings I found there... and they have not been touched as it has always worked. I'll try the above url for that one also. Been meening to update it to 9.2 as soon as I have time (and can find a media... not available as box from where we got the 9.0... so now that it's on FTP, maybe I'll try that...). -- HG
