My temporary GPU card is: VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Juniper XT [Radeon HD 5770] About a month ago the GUI desktop on my most often used linux installations went form high-res (1920x1080) to something rather very low-res. I've never had VoidLinux in GUI yet at all, and all but one of the others use one DM or another. In slackware I always did "startx" and now that too goes to a low-res desktop. Tumbleweed is different! If I carry on with SDDM in low-res to log-in then it too will bring up GUI is low-res BUT if I do it the slackware way (logging-in in terminal mode followed by startx) then I get the previously always successful 1920x1080 desktop ..as I should. So where is Tumbleweed getting this from while all the others have gone tango-uniform? And what's amiss in my other distros? What can I look at to TS?

This will give you a clue;
$ sudo mv sddm.conf sddm.conf-bak
/etc/sddm.conf or /etd/sddm.conf.d/sddm.conf
Thank you /etc/sddm.conf.d is a folder but it's empty And the shift to low-res affected several distros the same way over a couple of weeks, the one exception being Tumbleweed where the original resolution survives but only if I log in before doing startx

Is this the same computer you had the NVidia GT 640 card in? If yes, di you still have NVidia drivers installed, not having completely purged them and their corresponding /etc/X11/ .conf files for use with the HD 5770? The Juniper cards are 15 year old Radeons, predating the release of amdgpu firmware and drivers. Yes, the only package yast shows with nvidia in the 'description' is ffnv-codec-devel.

There isn't a single .conf file under /etc/X11 xf86-video-ati is installed everything with nouveau in it is installed
The Juniper cards are 15 year old Radeons, predating the release of amdgpu firmware and drivers.
Rather interesting, when I log in and do 'startx' at first the screen flashes in low-res but then (I presume as plasma takes over) it goes into high-res. So what is plasma using? It gives me 1920 x 1080 /usr/lib/sddm/sddm.conf.d/ has thses 00-general.conf 10-plasma.conf 10-theme.conf 11-kwin_wayland.conf 20-breeze-openSUSE.conf
Do all distros have required radeon GPU firmware installed.
I haven't looked at them yet

Officially, openSUSE does not support use of startx. Content of /var/log/Xorg.#.log may provide clues to what is happening. Also, now that you are using radeon, you may need to rebuild your initrds to clear out anything that remains of nouveau and/or nvidia, and have _added_ radeon, unless you have since installed a new kernel. If you have not, and you don't already have latest, simply install it. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. I thank the Kremlin of Creation it doesn't, because startx was the ONLY thing that worked all this time until Masaru Nomiya suggested a file edit! But the fun is only beginning. Once I got SDDM to do its thing I noticed a little quirk in the desktop layout. I have a short script that executes in .profile I think to get xeyes up. It includes: ------- if [ "$desktop" = "kde" ] then echo it is kde xeyes -geometry 70x50+36+420 & xeyes -geometry 70x50+1750+420 & else echo No kde, no xeyes fi ------- NB. only two calls to xeyes but when Pulse loads what I get is https://imgur.com/RHZ7ldG.png 3 pairs of eyes AND another half screen that appears only in the capture.

I don't sdee any radeon drivers but I installed the few packages with 'radeon' in their name with Yast.

The following additions to /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup will solve your problem;
xrandr --output Virtual1 --mode 1920x1080
Thank you, THAT seems to have helped after a few reboots, a cigar for Masaru Nomiya! The rest I will cover in my answer to Felix Miata along with a no less funy intro :-)
Best Regards.
