An additional advantage of shift-pageup/down is that you have outputs of commands, commands themselves and other things that you can copy/paste from there... yes, that was really why I asked. Sorry for that.
And thanks again - in advance to those who can answer this one. Meanwhile, shall dig into kernel sources.
Unfortunately, the textmode console buffer relies totally on the video hardware for the scrollback (unless you are talking about the vesa framebuffer console that SuSE puts on tty1.)
