Dear my friends... I used "taper" for unattended back up on a tape cartridge. But I found that this software does not work sometimes. My server does backup on 20 o'clock every day. with taper and triggered by the crond. Now I want to use KDat. It works nicely. But I don't know how to use this software to do unattended and automatic backup every 20 o'clock. Can KDat do unattended backup? Anybody can suggest me a backup software belong to open software? Thank you very much. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! - Internet access at a great low price. http://promo.yahoo.com/sbc/

A simple tar command in a script in cron can do this. tar cvf /dev/st0 /files for example. You will need to change where your tape drive in located and what you want to backup.
Thank you very much for your answer.
If I do like this :
"
tar -cvf /dev/st0 /home
"
, does tar overwrite on the tape automatically or just
does appending on the tape cartridge ?
Thanks my friend.

It will over-write the tape. That is what the "c" does, create. If you want to look at all of the options user tar --help. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)
If I do like this below in cron task:
"
0 20 * * * tar cvf /dev/st0 /home /srv/www/htdocs
"
Will it do the backup every 20 o'clock?
And what are the names of the files as the backup
result with tar? is it only a single name of file or
it will be the same as the original file name but only
with "tar" at the end of the backup result? for
example is the is "one.sxw" it will be "one.sxw.tar" ?
And how should I execute restore?
Can I do like this :
"
tar -xvf /dev/st0
"?
Thank you very much in advance.

There are a lot of helpful sites on the internet about tar. Google is your
friend, but here are a few:
http://lantech.geekvenue.net/chucktips/jason/chuck/994016279/index_html
http://www-jerry.oit.duke.edu/linux/bluedevil/HOWTO/backups_howto.html
Many more that I saw then this.
You could also write a script to perform the backup and then check what is
on the tape after the backup. Something like:
tar cvf /dev/st0 /home /srv/www/htdocs > /tmp/backup.log
tar tvf /dev/st0 >> /tmp/backup.log
This is just off the top of my head, so the above might need a little
tweaking.
