Will it be possible to install 9.0 alongside my working 8.2 install (currently using grub), for testing purposes? Can the YaST installer resize a reiser partition? If not, I can always trash my old Windows partition and use it for 9.0 while I test it out :-) John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Knossos: escape the ever-changing labyrinth before the Minotaur catches you!

Of course you can, this is Linux! On this box I''ve got 3 Linux OS's and 1 W2k, piece of cake...:-) Cheers, HÖ -- /// Helgi Örn Helgason, Registered Linux User: #189958 \\\ \\\ ~~~~ SuSE 8.2 * Kernel 2.4.20-4GB * KDE 3.1.4 ~~~~ ///

My point is, does YaST detect an existing installation and install correctly alongside that existing installation if asked? I know it's *possible* - I'm wondering whether it's *easy* (in proper SuSE style). Yes YaST will tell you the SUSE Linux versions ie 8.1 8.2 and in which partitions they are and from there on you can decide where to install your new version -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

Dunno about the 9.0 installer, but given that the 8.2 installer could I assuume it will ;). It will probably not work if you already have 4 primary partitions in use though (e.g. hda1 /windows/C hda2 swap hda3 / hda4 /localdata ) Kind regards, -- Gerhard den Hollander Phone :+31-10.280.1515 ICT manager Direct:+31-10.280.1539 Jason Geosystems BV Fax :+31-10.280.1511 gdenhollander@Fugro-Jason.com POBox 1573 visit us at http://www.Fugro-Jason.com 3000 BN Rotterdam JASON.......#1 in Reservoir Characterization The Netherlands This e-mail and any attachment is/are intended solely for the named addressee(s) and may contain information that is confidential and privileged.

Thanks for that - I've never had cause to try and resize a reiser partition before! And I've only one primary and one extended partition, so no problems there (although the disk has no unallocated space). In that case, can I safely have common working directories, i.e. /home, available for both and be without problems with the .xxx config files. And is there a how-to on this please? scsijon

You will definitely have problems with a lot of config files and folders. What I do is keeping the config files & folders which I know will work between versions on a seperate partition (where I keep my work files) and symlink to them from the home folders. That's how I do when upgrading to a new version of SuSE or when evaluating other Linux dists. Of course you need to keep the same UID to make this work properly.
And is there a how-to on this please?
Trial & error & email lists...:-) Honestly, I haven't seen a howto on this yet. Cheers, HÖ -- /// Helgi Örn Helgason, Registered Linux User: #189958 \\\ \\\ ~~~~ SuSE 8.2 * Kernel 2.4.20-4GB * KDE 3.1.4 ~~~~ ///
How should the drive be partitioned to handle the multiple distro boot?
GRUB or LILO?

There are several methods to do this, a more specified question would have been better. But in short if you only got one harddisk you can choose to have one primary partition an extended one, there you can make several logical slices where you can install Linux. Here's an example from my laptop partition table: /dev/hda1 103,3 MB /boot (SuSE, ext3) Primary /dev/hda2 6 GB /W2k (NTFS) Primary Primary extended: /dev/hda5 4 GB / (SuSE, ext3) Logical /dev/hda6 3 GB /store (My files, ext3) Logical /dev/hda7 1 GB swap (shared) Logical /dev/hda8 4 GB / (Other Linux, ext3) Logical
GRUB or LILO?
That is a matter of taste, the choice is yours. If you are new to both perhaps you should use (and learn) Grub which is the one that probably will rule out Lilo sonner or later. Actually I was hoping for a dual boot RH and Suse.
I was figuring a separate /boot / /home and common /swap between them.
Its a 40 gig drive and Grub as boot loader.

IF you are talking about a _clean harddisk_ (deleting Windows or whatever there is) then you can make all partitioning from the SuSE 8.2 installation program, just choose advanced mode and go (page 26 in the Administration Guide...:-) Cheers, HÖ -- /// Helgi Örn Helgason, Registered Linux User: #189958 \\\ \\\ ~~~~ SuSE 8.2 * Kernel 2.4.20-4GB * KDE 3.1.4 ~~~~ ///
Which would you install first RH or SUSE figuring GRUB as the boot
loader.
