RE: [opensuse] The smbfs/cifs fiasco in 10.2
Don't use dynamic addressing?
just because, eh? wonderful... ~~~~ Your DHCP server will, more than likely, hand out the same IP address to the same mac address of the workstation's nic. Also, edit your hosts file, /etc/hosts, with the name and IP address of the 'share' machine. ~James -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wish. My DHCP server at home is a Motorola voip terminal adapter. I have a Macintosh with OXS and an Ultra 20 with Solaris 10, both using DHCP. I found on a few occasions that the Mac would be given the address that was given to the Ultra 20 and the Ultra 20 would get another address which messed up other PCs that were expecting to find the Ultra 20 at a certain address. Worse yet is when I was setting up another PC with SuSE 10.2. I started having net problems on all the other computers. Instant Messengers were constantly dropping offline. I discovered that the SuSE PC had been given the same address as the Ultra 20 so I just made them all fixed addresses.
Also, edit your hosts file, /etc/hosts, with the name and IP address of the 'share' machine. That's exactly what I did with all the PCs that were connecting to shares on the Ultra 20 and this is why I had to insure that the Ultra 20 would always get the same address even though it is using DHCP. Since I could never figure out how to do that reliably, I just made all the others except the Ultra 20 fixed so that the Ultra 20 would always get the same address.

CIFS wasn't, and isn't, ready to replace SMBFS. CIFS remains very buggy, and virtually useless on networks that include W9x and OS/2 LM I certainly wouldn't dare to argue that one but I would like to know if anyone else reading this thinks the same?
I am very much interested in this thread because I am trying to use Windows shares from a PC I just finished setting up with SuSE 10.2 I discovered that the method I used a few years ago seems to not exist any more. I did run across some KDE tool that let me connect to a Windows share but it seemed to not be mounted anywhere, just some kind of temp connection from which I could copy files with the Konqueror file manager. In light of comments in this thread about smb support and cifs buggyness, I don't know which way to go at this point. What is the conclusion here? Which method should I use in a SuSE 10.2 system to mount Windows shares served from Samba on an Ultra 20?
