There were problems with Mandrake and some other brand than Teac. All I can say is that I haven't heard of anything to implicate your actions where at fault. hdc would imply that is was on the second IDE buss, with would be correct. the use of hdc=ide-scsi only implicates the drivers to use. If you do not have this scsi emulation in place the cd-burner software just won't work. Linux doesn't usually cause things to smoke.
