My pc: SuSE 8.2 (standard kernel), Teac CD-RW, ... I wanted yesterday to go to a friend and fetch some mp3's and films from his hdd. In order to do that I took my hdd as well (I'm talking about some 100GB stuff). Because his pc has only win2k I installed my hdd as primary master (the same as back home). His CD drive is a regular Teac CD-ROM. I wanted to see a cd that was in the cd tray so from KDE I just clicked the cdrom icon; then we both heard some strange noise coming from his pc but nothing happened. Only after a few minutes we realized that his cd-rom was "toasted"; it even smelled. Well the problem is not his unit (he had just bought it and the guys from the shop had nothing to do but replace it), but is it possible that it could be my OS to blame (actually me, but ...)? Could the fact that in my unit it loaded hdc=ide-scsi, be the cause of this problem ? _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. There were problems with Mandrake and some other brand than Teac. All I can say is that I haven't heard of anything to implicate your actions where at fault. hdc would imply that is was on the second IDE buss, with would be correct. the use of hdc=ide-scsi only implicates the drivers to use. If you do not have this scsi emulation in place the cd-burner software just won't work. Linux doesn't usually cause things to smoke.
