Re: Fw: [SLE] new to linux - problems getting started!
I got this board. It's a very nice board. Never had problem. LILO on MBR works without problems.

hi steven, many thanks for your email. I will try to answer your questions in order! I think LILO is on a floppy disk - this is how i boot to linux. I am running windows ME :( Hardware: AMD-K6-2 MS-5169 ATX AL9 mainboard EIDE1 master - 8.4 Gb hard drive (windows) slave - 20Gb hard drive (linux) EIDE2 master - DVDrom slave - CD rewriter video - SiS AGP SVGA card 4096 audio - soundblaster live! player 5.1 ( the temperamental nature of the sound card was
one
reason for trying linux - it has never worked well in windows). Many thanks, Dave. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steven Hatfield" <ashari@knightswood.net> To: "sunbeams" <sunbeams@0800dial.com> Cc: <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Sunday, June 03, 2001 8:21 PM Subject: Re: [SLE] new to linux - problems getting starte
Was it the jumper for flashing the BIOS that got loose? Hope these questions are not too difficult, but did he change anything in the actual BIOS? Have you ever been in the BIOS before? You can enter the BIOS and easily get out without saving anything, but it might be intriguing to see what is in there.

Try booting from the floppy boot disk, select installation. Then select boot installed system. You will have to choose the root device, which is /dev/hda* * for something, like 1 2 3 4 etc, if you are not sure keep trying until it loads. Once it is loaded (it should load) you may want to remember what the root device was, so that you can have the option of Lilo booting from the MBR. Works great for me with win98 installed (hardly ever used though). Let us know if you need any specific advice, or any problems. Matt
I assume you used a floppy to boot the kernel, and then the floppy loaded init from the hard drive. If I remember well (don't have the original mail and it isn't yet in the archive), The system hangs at setting the CMOS clock. Can you start with a SuSE boot cd or a set of floppies? I hope (but don't kow for sure) these don't try to set your clock. Once you're booted and you have the installscreen (assuming you're in the graphical installation mode) press ctrl+alt+F5 to get a console. You can then mount your root partition like: mount /dev/hda? /mnt #with ? being the partition number, if you don't remember, you can probably find out with a 'fdisk -l /dev/hda' When your disk is mounted. try /mnt/usr/bin/pico /mnt/sbin/init.d/boot (or, if you don't have pico, /mnt/usr/bin/vi) look for the section that starts with #set and adjust the CMOS clock comment out every clock based thing by putting a # before every line. unmount the disk (umount /mnt) so everything is synced, return back to the installation screen with alt+F7, click abort installation, and then in the YaST1 screen another time end/reboot (or something the like) Like others suggested, it's not a bad idea to install lilo in the MBR, floppies are not very reliable. hth,
