In addition to the other options mentioned, you might also consider Jabber at http://www.jabber.org. It is an open messenger system with gateways to MS Messenger, AIM, ICQ and Yahoo.

There is a program called kmess. I have compiled it and tested that it started, but have no MS account to really test it. Try a search on freeshmeat to find kmess. Olle -- MicroSoft Network may not carry this message without license to do so. License to carry this message requires a fee of $1000, payable within 30 days to Olle Viksten. Appearance of this message on MicroSoft Network constitutes an agreement to terms.
