I have a quick question, I have a windows box and a suse box at work. The suse box has no ethernet card in it and the windows box uses its' ethernet card to connect to the internal network of the organization. What I need to do is connect the windows box to the suse box, and use some sort of terminal program to get to the suse box in order to transfer files from windoze to suse. The reason for

is that the suse box stays connected to the internet through a modem and the windows box is connected to the internal network. I can not give the suse box an ip (against policy right now) so I am thinking some sort of null modem connection, but I have never done this before so I need some help on how to set it up on both ends and what equipment (type of cable) to use.
It's been a while since I've transferred files this way so I may be a tad rusty. Fortunately, I'm sure the list members will point out any errors I may make.;-) The null modem connection you mentioned should be fairly easy to set up. The other option would be through the parallel ports, however, I've always had less trouble with the serial (null modem) connection. The hardware: The most you will need is a serial cable, a null modem and possibly a gender changer. You might find a cable that has all of these features built into it or, if you're game, you can make one. The software: Windows: Terminal program such as hyperterminal or terra term with file transfer capability (such as zmodem, kermit, etc). Linux: minicom, kermit, or agetty and the same file transfer protocol as on the windows side. (I'd probably go with agetty and kermit, since that's what I'm most familiar with). Since this task has a fair number of options, have a look through the following docs: Text-Terminal-HOWTO (lots of general info) Mac-Terminal mini-HOWTO (good even without a Mac) You also might want a look at ftp.colombia.edu/kermit should you decide to go the kermit route. I hope that gets you started. If you have any trouble setting stuff up once you've decided how to proceed, let us know. Sorry I couldn't provide a quick answer. Tim
Thanks in advance for your help, Robert
