Unable to install mplayer from packman
I am trying to install MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-5 from Pckman on my SUSE 10.0. I get an error like: error: Failed dependencies: libx264.so.46 is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-5 However x264 is installed: # rpm -qa | grep x264 x264-0.0svn20060318-1 so I tried to upgrade to the latest rpm: # rpm -Uvh x264-0.0svn20060425-1.i586.rpm warning: x264-0.0svn20060425-1.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 4efd697e error: Failed dependencies: libx264.so.45 is needed by (installed) libffmpeg0-0.4.9-4.pm.cvs20060409 even --force didn't work. Neither on the x264 nor the mplayer package. Any ideas? Kostas

Hi Kostas, First, it's not a good idea to use "--force" with rpm. If you know exactly what the conflict is and resolving it will be your next step, then using it is reasonable. Otherwise, the option ought to be avoided. Regarding MPlayer: You can now install MPLayer as well as other Packman and Suser-Guru packages with YaST's 'Install and Remove Software' module, which means you no longer have to download the rpm packages separately and install them from the command line. First, add the following installation sources in YaST > Software > Installation Source: protocol: http server: packman.rsync.zmi.at directory: suse/10.0 protocol: http server: ftp4.gwdg.de directory: pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.0/ Make sure "refresh" is "on" for these sources in the Installation Source module. Next, open YaST's "Software Management" module, select "Package Groups" in the 'Filter' box (top-left.) In the left pane, scroll all the way down to the bottom and select "zzz All". When the alphabetical list of packages has refreshed in the right pane, scroll down to MPlayer and select it for installation. You might also want to install mplayerplug-in while you're at it. This adds MPlayer's capabilities to Mozilla/Firefox by installing the appropriate plug-ins.) Click 'Accept'... YaST should automatically resolve the dependencies and ask you to confirm them with an 'OK'. If... and please advise me on this behavior... if YaST does *not* automatically resolve the dependencies, scroll up and down the packages list in the right pane and select to install them yourself... that's why I've had you open the packages list instead of just using the "Search" field. Good luck & regards, Carl regards, Carl

I had actually tried yast before rpm but that didn't find mplayer when I searched. zzz All is a nice trick and this time I found them. However, we have a problem with our ISP since yesterday (maybe that's why yast search didn't find it yesterday?) and I had to abort the update. Will try again later. Thanks for the tip! Kostas

You're welcome and good luck! You know the mirrors are going to be 'buzzing' with activity very soon! Carl
