I am putting together a networking system. The help I have received from this group has been outstanding. I now need the advice of the group on the different brands of hubs. I would appreciate the groups opinions on the following brands of hubs. wisecom, IBM, netgear, hawking, asante, umax, linksys. The network cards I have obtained are 10mbps cards. Does the hub have to be a 10mbps or will the cards work with a 100mbps hub? I realize that 100mbps may be overkill, but if the price is right.... Of those you list I prefer Linksys and Netgear, I also like 3com, and Cisco always has good stuff, but you will pay for both of those. I have a little 5 port 100mbps hub from Linksys that I like alot. i got it in a kit and it's been great. The Hub can be either 10 or 100baseT both will work. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Darren R. compusa has a deal with 2 100 nicks a 100 hub and wire for 129.00$ hard to beat. Linksys I believe. I paid the same for a 10bt setup last year. ] -- Michael H. Don't forget SMC, that's what I am running and I love it. Bought a 10/100 8 port hub for under a hundred bucks at comp USA on sale. -----Original Message----- From: nevada [mailto:nevada] On Behalf Of Nevada Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2000 8:26 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Hubs I am putting together a networking system. I used wisecom with no problems for a 10Mb network.
The network cards I have obtained are 10mbps cards. Does the hub have to be a 10mbps or will the cards work with a 100mbps hub? I realize that 100mbps may be overkill, but if the price is right....
If you get a 100Mb hub, make sure that the hub is marked as a 10/100 or "auto-sensing". A 100Mb-only hub will not work with 10Mb cards. A 10/100 or "auto-sensing" hub can work with either 10Mb or 100Mb network cards. Be sure that your cables are listed as CAT-5 so you can upgrade later to a 100Mb network by only changing the network cards.
