Re: [SLE] FW: [SLE] Where's the 2GB limitation: MS Backup or Samba?
Duh!! Didn't get that the issue was _one_ file. I'll learn to read when I
grow up.

Shares are not physical disks...
So, the FAT16 issue, just works only on physical disks (where you _have_ to access boot, fat and directory areas on the disk).
Using shares, gives you abstraction from the OS who gives the share (even NetWare uses it's own partition and volume format instead of those M$ FAT16/32).
The problem is not capacity, but is the total lenght of a single file.
If you create several files each one less than 2gb, you will "see no problems", but if you try to create a 4gb file, it may be impossible on EXT2 (I had to work with compressed files, and decompress | process | comress again, to avoid that limitation).
Just commenting...

Beg to differ. I'm running a 3.6 gig ext2 on my Dell PIII 450 at work (second partition on a 12 gig drive) and a 3 gig on one box at home (ASUS mb - PII-233) and a 3.5 on the other box (generic PPro 150). The limit is probably not ext2 (there might be BIOS implications also). If the Windoze box is seeing it as a FAT16 share, that's where the 2gig limit is. I haven't worked with Samba, but it sounds like the share is shown as a FAT16 drive.

So 2GB is the max filesize on ext2? How about ext3 or ReiserFS?
