Hi, Anyone is aware of YP/NIS server/client tutorial? The documentation bundled with these packages in SuSE is rather scarce. Basically, I am need to do the following: 1) Setup temporary YP/NIS server on old PC and transfer all user accounts to the new one. 2) Setup new PC as YP/NIS master server. 3) Synchronize user accounts with 3 new servers located in different offices, and linked with the master server via VPN. Thanks in advance for any suggestion(s). ********************************************* * Best Regards --- Andrei Verovski * * Personal Home Page * http://snow.prohosting.com/guru4mac * Mac, Linux, DTP, Development, IT WEB Site *********************************************

Anyone is aware of YP/NIS server/client tutorial? The documentation bundled with these packages in SuSE is rather scarce.
Basically, I am need to do the following:
1) Setup temporary YP/NIS server on old PC and transfer all user accounts to the new one. 2) Setup new PC as YP/NIS master server.
Make the new PC a NIS slave and then turn it into a NIS master. YaST do a pretty good job. Only thing missing is put a cron job to update the maps[*] on the master server and starting ypxfrd. But I did it too long ago to be sure about what I'm talking about. I just remember I studied Kukuk howto http://www.linux-nis.org/ when I was using SuSE 7.1 (?) and it was worth to do so... but now with SuSE 8.1 everything got much simpler. Anyway as usual... if you're doing serious stuff better you read the howto so if something will break, you'll know where to put your hands. [*] eg. 0 0-23/3 * * * root make -C /var/yp Yep... it is my lan I don't have too frequent changes here
Andrei, Is http://www.damian.uklinux.net/nis.html not any help ? Damian
