Hello, Slightly lamer question, though I have searched the archives before posting... Running SuSE 8.1 -- have the login screen set to non-graphical, but how do I get rid of the crazy SuSE "bitmap" background? I simply want the system to boot to a "normal" terminal screen -- green base text, black background, some text is colored -- directories, binaries, etc. Thanks, Dominic --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus]
Good day Dominic,
Running SuSE 8.1 -- have the login screen set to non-graphical, but how do I get rid of the crazy SuSE "bitmap" background? I simply want the system to boot to a "normal" terminal screen -- green base text, black background, some text is colored -- directories, binaries, etc.
I *think* you can just remove the 'vga=<something>' parameter that the boot loader passes to the kernel. Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

Figured this out on my own...perhaps this will be of help to others:
edit /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash
change SPLASH="yes" to "no"
run SuSEconfig
System now boots into a traditional terminal, without the SuSE theme border.
Cheers,
Dominic
# Choose the bootsplash theme. It should be based in
# /usr/share/splash/themes/
THEME="SuSE"
#
# SPLASH can be set to "no" to turn off the splash-screen on console 1
# at boot time (after kernel load).
#
# SPLASH=no to disable the splash screen
#
# SPLASH=yes to show the splash screen
#
SPLASH="no"

damn, there's a motherload of cool stuff i can twink with under /etc/sysconfig... hey! this reminds me of how Irix takes care of system config! it has all the files under /etc/sysconfig and then you run a tool to update the system! any new tools you install you got to make a file under /etc/sysconfig. cool! yey for Irix :)

I think you can also do this via Yast -> System -> /Editor for /etc/sysconfig -> etc -> splash. -- __________________________ DJ mailto: linux_programmer@hotmail.com
