This morning my desktop pc running in dualboot XP/OpenSuse 10.3 refused to boot up under openSuse. The boot goes as far as: ... /dev/sda10 on /home type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr) NTFS driver 2.1.28 [flags: R/W module] NTFS Volume version 3.1 after this nothing happens anymore unless I hit the [prt scr] buttom. If I hit that buttom the bootprocess goes further but stops at random points. At that point the only thing I can do is switch of the pc. Thanks to the openSuse live cd I was able to solve the problem. It turned out to be a faulty fstab. /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST3120023A_3KA02538-part1 /windows/C ntfs defaults,nls=utf8,umask=0222,users 0 0 /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST3120023A_3KA02538-part5 /windows/D ntfs-3g defaults,users,locale=nl_BE.UTF-8 0 0 That entry was created by ntfs-config tools. Untile yesterday morning this worked just fine but after some updates, I believe ntfs-g3 was one of the updates I did, things went wrong. Anyway everything works normal again. Thanks,

It is unconscionable when installs freeze, rescue discs do not work, updates break things and people try and persuade you not to file bug reports. Progress is a funny thing. History is a great teacher. I think I learned these oss truths right after Mandrake 8.2. I never installed 9. Let's keep the distro under control, analyze the problems and take corrective action. You can substitute "aircraft" for "distro" and "situation" for "problems" to understand where the logic comes from and I trust with the substitutions, you understand the consequences of failure. I am willing to believe these are necessary growing pains being experienced by the best distro going. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
