Hi List I am having a problem on my Super Install (final-20051003-standard-kde). I have a dns running with dnsmasq on my 9.3 server which works fine from my other 9.3 box, but is making problems with my 10.0. if i do an "nslookup server" in an terminal, it works fine on both, but if i add an repo in yast using the name or using firefox to go there, it takes ages and then it displays another site of from the inet. There is a dsl router acting as dns to which all requests are delivered the dnsmasq box cannot resolve. The /etc/resolv.conf is the same on both boxes. Even removing the second nameserver from resolv.conf does not solve the problem! Does anyone know, whats going on here? thanks, rauch

host server tells me: 'server.rauch-webdesign.local has address 192.168.0.1' but i noticed that even a 'ssh server' fails like everything else. -rauch

Hi rauch, rename your local net: ".local" is a registered pseudo toplevel domain registered for mdns responder. Try to disable mdnsd in the runlevel editor. -- mdc

mdnsd is disabled, as i don't need Apple Rendezvous. I even disabled nscd for testing, since it once made problems on my 9.3 box. I will try renaming my domain to something other, but i thought .local was for internal domains not available to the inet, because they are not assigned to anything? Please correct me if i'm wrong! Thanks, rauch

Hi rauch, do you run lwresd? what's the contens of your /etc/resolv.conf? what's the contens of your /etc/nsswitch.*? what's the contens of your /etc/host.conf?

That's a problem, how "dnsmasq" handles such requests...

Not really sure about this. I know that Apple has registered this (pseudo-)tld for Rendezvous. There was an article on developer.apple.com, but I can't remember the exact URI. -- mdc

Hi rauch,
do you run lwresd?
No, i don't run lwresd. It is not installed either.
what's the contens of your /etc/resolv.conf?
nameserver 192.168.0.1 search rauch-webdesign.lokal ^^ Changed the line above now from .local to .lokal on all pcs and it works now
what's the contens of your /etc/nsswitch.*?
passwd: compat group: compat hosts: files dns networks: files dns services: files protocol: files rpc: files ethers: files netmasks: files netgroup: files publickey: files bootparams: files automount: files nis aliases: files
what's the contens of your /etc/host.conf?
order hosts,bind multi on

iirc dnsmasq reads the contents from the local /etc/hosts and delivers anything else to the dns from /etc/resolv.conf

Thanks mdc, this was it! renaming from .local to .lokal made the difference! It now works fine, but I don't understand why this happens. I realize that mdns uses this, but why does it not work, when mdnsd is disabled? to bad i cannot uninstall mdnsResponder due to dependencies to try if it would work without having it installed. Thanks for your help, rauch

Hi rauch, seems that the special handling of ".local" had made it into the libc. -- mdc

Well, this would explain a lot! Anyhow, it is working now, but i believe this could be a problem for those using a samba domain with *.local and having a bigger system they cannot switch so easy. Thanks for your help again! rauch
