Why not just use a POP mailer and be done with it?

a pop mailer? i've always been given the answer: "you *must* use sendmail, smail, qmail" - which seems like a lot of trouble, as you said it, for a PC. so if a pop mailer just sends my messages to my ISP for further delivery i'll be *more* than happy to use one. you wouldn't happen to know any mailers by name..?
